Staring at myself in the mirror my blue eyes glistened back at me with the deepest form of sadness. I fiddled with the collar on my leather jacket and placed the dog tag around my neck. It was the one single thing from my childhood that reminded me of the good times with my mother. She had given it to me when I was very young. I remember her smiling at me sweetly and placing it in my hand. She folded my hand over it and I curiously looked at it, wondering what in the world this piece of metal was.
I stared at my mother's face, " Mommy, what is this?" I asked while tracing my fingers over the frigid, tiny spheres of the beaded chain.
" It's a dog tag. You're supposed to put it around your neck and wear it."
" Why is it all scratched up? What happened to it mommy?"
" It's been through a lot, but I assure you that one day it will help lead you to where you need to go. Take it Kratos, it's yours to keep. And always remember that I love you very, very much. Never forget this one thing that I am going to tell you. Kratos," she said while looking deeply into my eyes. " Sometimes the most beautiful things start out in a rough place, alone and broken. But eventually, the pieces start to come together and when they do, something beautiful will come out."
" Okay, mommy," was all I replied.
How else would a toddler respond? But there was a certain type of hopeful gleam in her eye when she said it. To this day I still could not understand the deeper meaning that she had through her sentence. No matter how many times I replayed her words in my head, or how many times I interpreted them a different way, I just couldn't seem to pick up on what she was trying to tell me.
Toying with the dog tag in my hand, I watched its reflection shine through the mirror before me. Flipping it around, I stared at the dragon symbol on the back of it. Settling on not thinking anymore about it, I threw the chain around my neck and watched it lay perfectly on my upper chest.
Maybe some things in life just were just not meant to be found out. This dog tag held a sacred memory, one of the few times that she had told me that she loved me instead of telling me that I was an abomination. Those were the good old times when love wasn't such a faraway picture.
I sighed as I slipped into my black biker boots. Opening the door to my room, I walked out and downstairs. Deciding to hang out in the lounge, Airilice was reading a magazine while Taj had a pair of headphones connected to his laptop. Thinking he was probably watching a movie or was in the middle of a mix, I didn't dare bother him. Raine was flipping through channels, and stopped on a girly romance flick.
"Oh no, anything but the chick flicks," I said rounding the corner of a chair. Glancing up at me, she let out a bright smile.
"Nope, you're watching it. I have to deal with you watching basketball all of the time, so the least you could do is suffer through one movie."
"Aw man, why Raine?"
"Shhh... the movie's on."
"Ugh, I hate this."
About fifteen minutes into the movie, I began to doze off. It felt so peaceful and free to roam about in the world of slumber. No more worries, no more fears, no more girly flicks.
"Dude, wake up."
"Kratos!"
Quickly waking up, Raine's blonde hair swooshed over me as her blue eyes looked confused.
"What Raine?" I sleepily grumbled..
" Someone's knocking on the entrance."
" You mean the front door?" I corrected.
