Late Night Phone Calls

Tommy

I love watching Darcy sleep. She looks completely at peace when she's sleeping. I love the way she smiles when she dreams or how she mumbles in her sleep. I love when Darcy rolls into me in her sleep. But I think I love it the most of all when she mumbles 'I love you, Tommy' when she's in the place between sleep and awake.

I couldn't tell you why I was awake but it was late at night. Darcy is rolled into me with her arms wrapped around my chest. After being on tour for so long I'm so happy just to be home with my beautiful wife. Her red hair is covering her face and I gently tuck her hair behind her ear. I gently run my fingers down her cheek and Darcy's arms get tighter around me. I smile and kiss her forehead.

"Darcy, let me up, baby." I say quietly and her arms loosen.

"Mmm, kay." Darcy says and rolls over to face the opposite direction.

I don't even know why I needed up, maybe I just needed to wander. I ended up in the kitchen and standing in the fridge. I guess I argue with myself about whether or not I want something to eat or if I want a beer or--

Bloody murder screaming comes from upstairs and I know it has to be Darcy, there's no one else in our fucking house. Darcy doesn't scream or cry or show any weakness because of how stubborn she is so this screaming scares the absolute hell out of me. I start to run up the stairs and towards our bedroom.

There's someone trying to hold Darcy down on the bed and---

I always what up at that part, it's a horrible dream that I haven't been able to shake it. I've been having these dreams since Darcy went back to LA and I can't be with her because I'm on tour until the Fourth of July weekend. Right now I'm in Vancouver and we are spending the next month or so here in Canada.

I look around the hotel room and I grab the hotel phone. I dial the number of our house and I catch a glimpse of the time as the phone rings, it's seven minutes after three in the morning. My wife is going to be in a great mood (California and British Columbia are in the same time zone, I think). The phone rings four or five times before it gets answered and I can imagine Darcy nearly falling out bed trying to find the ringing phone.

"Hello?" My wife answers but sounds half asleep.

"Babe, can you do me a favour?" I ask.

"Tommy it's three o'clock in the morning!" Darcy tells me loudly.

"I know, I know, I'm sorry." I apologize. "Please?"

"Okay." She agrees.

"Can you go make sure the door is locked?" I plead.

"Are you having that nightmare still?" Darcy asks.

"Yeah." I admit. "Wait, how did you know that?"

"Nikki called me and told me, he's really worried about you." She explains. "And you've been calling me every night since I got home asking me the exact same thing."

"Oh right." I laugh. "Will you please go check the door?"

"Yeah, babe. I'll be right back." Darcy promises me.

Within a few minutes Darcy is back at the phone with me and I can breathe easy knowing that my wife is safe in our locked home.

"I miss you, Tommy." She tells me. "I know you're not sleeping and it bugs me."

"How about this? When I get home we'll stay in bed for a week?" I offer and she laughs.

"Then I don't think we'll be sleeping." Darcy guesses and I smile.

"Yeah sounds about right. Did Amy give D that information on the adoption agent in California?" I ask.

"Yeah, Dani and CC went to meet with the agent, I think her name is Helen. They actually have a meeting with a mom who can't afford to take care of her baby, she's about six months along and is looking at parents for the baby. I think the meeting is tomorrow morning." My wife explains to me. "D is really hoping the mom chooses her and CC."

"They'd make great parents but how would that work with CC and Dani both going on tour?" I wonder and she sighs.

"Dani is trying to figure out a way to tell CC that she'd hire a nanny and the nanny would come on tour with us. We'd just do shorter tours, I mean us girls." Darcy explains. "That would work until the kid starts school the way Dani sees it."

"So CC will rarely see the kid? How the hell is that fair?" I ask getting a little more defensive than I meant to.

"I don't know, D is trying to figure something out! Jesus, why are you getting so defensive? It's not you who won't be seeing your kid." She tells me.

"Just kinda got me thinking." I admit. "If we had a kid how would that work? I mean would you hire a nanny and I'd never see them?"

"No, Tommy." Darcy promises me. "I'd figure out a way to take as close to a year as I can off. You'd probably have to go on tour but we'd fly out to see you as much as possible. Or we could get off lucky and get pregnant while we're recording. I think eventually us girls will slow down on touring anyways."

"Why do you think that?" I wonder.

"We all want to be moms and Rosie and Jade have been spending a lot of time with these guys." My wife gossips and I laugh.

"Really?" I ask.

"Yeah, I mean Rose is still in Texarkana but she's in a pretty depressed state since her little sister died but she's been talking to this football player. He plays line backer for Los Angeles Rams." Darcy explains. "Jadie has been spending a lot of time with this marine out of Barstow."

"Think it's the real thing?" I ask and she laughs a bit.

"I think so." She admits. "I mean I have the real thing with you so I think I can see it on my friends." She laughs.

"You know that I love you, right?" I smile and I can almost see Darcy's bright smile.

"I love you too, Tommy." Darcy tells me. "But you need to sleep, baby."

"Yeah, so do you." I sigh. "Sweet dreams, beautiful."

"Goodnight, my love." She tells me and the phone disconnects.

I can picture it, you know. That picture perfect family with Darcy and it would be perfect. I can't wait to be completely honest.
