"Surprise!" mom exclaimed happily. I wasted no time in attacking her in a huge hug.
"I missed you, mom." I mumbled into her shoulder. She held me tightly before we released each other. "What the hell are you doing here? And why didn't you tell me you were coming!" I snapped a little peeved.
"Because it was a surprise, duh!" she retorted.
Before I could come up with another question, my dad emerged. He looked quite cocky and proud of himself. I raised my eyebrow and gestured to mom.
"You knew about this?" I asked. Dad's grin widened even more and nodded proudly.
"Am I the greatest or am I the greatest?" he boasted, opening his arms wide for me. I stared at him flatly and gestured to my drenched appearance.
"I walked for thirty minutes straight in the rain before these fine gentlemen-" I said pointing at the Australian band that I befriended, "picked me up. I called you and you didn't answer." I grumbled.
Dad's eyes widened as he registered three strangers in his house. "Why do always befriend guys!" he whined, "For once, would it kill you to make nice with girls your own age?"
"You made new friends?" mom raised her eyebrow before elbowing me and winking. "Nice, they're cute."
"I think you're both missing the point." Tara cut in making her presence be known. "She hitchhiked with strangers!"
Ahh, the responsible adult.
"I was getting there sweetie." Dad mumbled sheepishly. He honestly didn't even let that cross his mind.
"Mom, dad, Tara." I said gesturing to each of them. "This is Josh, Gage, and Parker. They're in a band named 'Meet me in the Hurricane'. They were kind enough to pick me up in the rain and not kill me." I smiled as I introduced them.
"Hello!" the boys chorused together. Mom's eyes widened in shock.
"They're Australian, brilliant!" she laughed clapping her hands happily.
"Act like an adult Kelly." dad rolled his eyes.
"Oh shut up old man!" mom scoffed.
And so it began.
My parent's divorce was fairly civil. And they were friends with each other. But at times they can be children together. They fight like siblings and it's super annoying to be around them sometimes. But for the most part it's amusing.
"I'm only six months older than you!" Dad cried out offended.
"Yeah twenty years and six months older than me!" mom retorted falsely. He really only was six months older than she was, but his bald patches weren't helping his case. "Look, you're even balding!" she pointed out smartly.
"Matey did this!" he argued. "And look at you! You're starting to grow crows feet!"
Mom gasped and covered the small wrinkles around her eyes. "Take that back!"
"No!"
"You've gotten fat and old Gary! It's time to call AARP!"
"You've gotten old Kelly, the 19th century called, they want you back!"
"Sorry I couldn't attend your funeral last year Gary!"
"Did the great depression dress you today?"
"You're a jerk!"
"You're a bully!"
"TARA!" they both cried out for back up. Tara on the other hand looked beyond done.
