"Ezra, if you don't stop staring at me, I will smack you so hard you'll have a perfect French accent." I warned him, as his eyes burned through me.

"Sorry, it's just that I've never seen someone so stupid in my life." he muttered, shaking his head in disappointment. "He wanted to talk! He obviously had something important to say and you totally brushed him off. I just don't get you, Matey." he sighed.

"No one does." Reese snorted, digging into his piece of apple pie.

"Wait, let me get this straight." mom cut in. "Nate-the boy you like-wanted to talk to you. But you avoided him completely and he bought himself a ticket to detention just so he could talk to you. Then you completely brushed him off because you were scared he was going to reject you?" I nodded as everything she had just relayed was accurate. "Sweetie, don't you think what he had to say was worth listening to?"

I furrowed my brows, as this did cross my mind. But my fear of rejection had stopped me. Whatever he had to say couldn't have been good. He was so intent on getting a hold of me, that it freaked me out.

Now here I was, two days later sulking over the 'what if' moment. While my mom, step brother, and one half of my best friend openly criticized me.

Jerks.

"So much stupid, in something so small." Ezra shook his head. I growled in frustration.

"Do you another black eye to match your current one?" I raised my eyebrow. Ezra shook his head, moving away from me. "Mom, I just want to start off on a clean slate. I was wrong to tell him that I liked him. He has a girlfriend-if you consider a creature like Sadie a human. Of course I should've seen the rejection coming a mile away, but I didn't. Now all I want is to forget it ever happened."

Mom frowned sympathetically and nodded. "You'll do what's right for you in the end sweetie. My girl is resilient."

"Resilient is one thing--hopelessly idiotic is another." Ezra mumbled, as if he was any help at all. I swiftly kicked the leg of his chair he was balancing on, and watched as he crashed to the ground. Reese openly laughed as he had no sympathy for the guy who smashed his hand.

"Matey." Mom chastised me, but easily cracked a grin when Ezra groaned in pain. I had to inherit my madness from someone.

"Why don't we get Reese to talk to him?" Ezra offered, as he sat up again. This time, he actually contributed helpful advise...my guess was that he didn't want to fall victim to me again. Can't say I blamed him.

"Reese will not be involved in this freak show!" Reese cried out. I stared at him flatly, knowing better. Reese held my gaze in a steady stare down. My determination didn't waver, and neither did his.

From the corner of my eye, I saw mom and Ezra watching us. "Do you think they'll kiss?" Ezra hissed.

"Mom smack him for me, will you?" I asked politely, keeping my eyes on Reese. From beside us, I heard Ezra cry in pain as mom hit him upside the head.

"You're not dragging me into this one." Reese said.

"That's cute, you actually think you have a choice." I laughed, sarcastically.

"He's my best friend Matey, I can't do it this time." Reese defended himself. I furrowed my brows, in confusion. He had helped me before, why couldn't he do it this time?

"You were willing to help me before. What's changed?" I asked skeptically.

"Bros before-"

"That better in s'mores!" I snapped, before he could say more. Reese sighed and backed off, I smiled in triumph as I had won...or so I thought.
