Your feet slipped around on the wet, autumn leaves as you rounded the corner to hide behind a large evergreen tree. The cold evening air shocked your lungs with every inhale and exhale. Each breath did nothing to calm your beating heart, threatening to pound out of your chest.

You looked to your side, seeing Sam a few meters away. He nodded his head once, slowly and almost mechanical. You returned the gesture and he took off at a sprint once more, heading farther away from you. You peeked around the edge of the tree only to see nothing. Nothing but deep darkness that threatened to swallow everything it touched, a darkness that would hold you like a prisoner until the end of time.

You swallowed harshly and started running again, willing yourself to go faster.

You saw Sam again, his silhouette setting him apart from the shadowed demons chasing you, closing in at your side.

With a jolt, you felt yourself be thrown forwards to the dirt. You could only lay there stunned, unable to get up or even shout for help.

However, Sam saw your fall. He changed his route to save you. Instead, the demons surrounded him like he was the last bit of food in a starving population. They tore at him, right in front of your eyes. There was so much blood...

He was screaming, looking straight at you with a look of pure agony and betrayal. Then all light died from his eyes.

"Sam!" you screamed, jolting upwards and finding yourself wrapped up in your sheets. Your room was entirely dark, no source of light to be found.

"Y/n!" Your door burst open. Immediately Sam was sitting down at the side of your bed. You untangled yourself and held him closely. Your breath was shaky with the effort to hold in sobs. "Hey, hey, it's okay," he soothed.

"You were killed," you whispered, voice cracking. "All I could do was watch helplessly while seeing the look in your eyes..."

"It's okay, I'm here. It was just a dream, it happens even to the best of us. Don't worry." He shifted so he could pull you closer to him, wrapping his arms around your waist. He sat with you until you stopped sniffling. "Are you better?"

"Yeah," you lied. Sam stood up and walked to the door. "Wait!" He turned back. "Stay with me?"

"Alright," he said. You lifted up the covers and slipped back under them, he soon joined you, laying on his back and allowing you to rest your head on his chest.

"Goodnight, Sam."

"Goodnight, Y/n."
