The park was covered in a thick blanket of white. The fountain that once ran 24/7 was frozen over, statues peeked out under their new snow caps, and the lights from the lamp posts set everything aglow. You sighed happily and watched as your pale breath faded away. Aside from the kids skiing down the street, everyone was in their homes. Probably wrapped up in a blanket or two.
And it was blissfully quiet.
"You're not too cold?" Castiel asked you. He had snowflakes on his hair and eyelashes and dusted over his trench coat.
You smiled. "Not at all."
"Good." He put a hand around your waist and held you close. He matched his step to yours-- each breaking through untouched snow with a delightful, faint crunch. Castiel looked up at the sky and watched as the flakes drifted down. Colorless confetti. "Each one is different," he told you. "Never in all my years have I found one identical to another. It's fascinating."
"You can see their details?"
He shrugged. "I am an angel of the Lord."
You felt yourself smile again and leaned into his touch. Moments like these with your boyfriend were rare. No hunts, no Sam or Dean watching over your shoulder. It felt good.
"Cas," you said, after a moment, "do you ever think about marriage?"
"Of course. It is one of the Holy Sacraments and one I consider to be very beautiful. I admit that the way I thought about it has changed, though."
"How so?"
"Before it was just a sacrament. Now I think it is a promise. People who love each other, trust each other, want to spend their lives together, vow to be faithful, loyal, and kind to each other. Before, it was a fleeting thought in my mind. There were other things to think about, more important things. Now, that I am with you, I think about it more." He looked down at you and kissed your forehead. "Someday, I would like to get married."
You stopped walking and hugged him. Holding him very close to you. You asked, "Someday?"
"Maybe soon," Castiel responded. "Why did you ask?"
"Because of the snow. The peacefulness, the white... because I'm here with you. And I love you."
"I love you, too."
"That's good to hear because--" You stepped away and reached into your coat pocket. From it, you pulled out a small box. The snow soaked through your jeans as you knelt in front of the angel. "Castiel, I love you. I trust you. And I want to spend my life with you. If you say yes, please say yes, I will vow to be loyal and kind to you. This isn't a fleeting idea. I have had the honor to know you, to fall for you, to make mistakes with you, and learn from you for years now. Someday I want to get married. I want that someday to be soon, with you by my side."
You opened the box. "Will you marry me?"
The glittering snowflakes continued to fall around you, landing calmly over the ring. You watched the snow, and you watched Castiel. The edge of his lips pulled back into a smile. There was a crinkle next to his eyes-- and his eyes themselves held a laugh.
"Yes," he said, pressing a hand to his temple, not in a stressed manner but in one of bewilderment. Happy, all the same. And his laugh came from within as you stood and gleefully embraced each other. "I will marry you."
