Chapter 12:
Jax’s P.O.V
After running in wolf form for several hours I was glad we had nearly approached the destination. Naturally I was apprehensive about what I may or may not find here, but I was glad we’d arrived here all the same. Because now I would finally know. I could finally put my mind to rest. Finally discover whether or not my little mate lay in the grounds of these vampires. And more to the point whether or not she was even alive anymore. I trembled slightly as I thought of Luce’s body, cold and un-moving. It was a terrifying image and it had been haunting me for awhile now. I just prayed it wasn’t a sign of what to expect. Stopping near the lake about a mile from the vampires lair I stopped and turned to my pack companions. They sat down on their rumps and eyed me, awaiting orders. It was a strange feeling to say the least. As beta of the pack I did occasionally give orders when the Alpha wasn’t around. But it was very rarely and I didn’t really enjoy it. I didn’t really feel right handing out orders. I know that would probably be different if I was the Alpha, but I’m not and to be honest I’m pleased with that. Being an Alpha was a hell of a responsibility and an Alpha wolf was even harder to keep in check than normal. ‘Okay. So we all know the plan of attack here. If I pick up Luce’s scent in the next mile, you guys will scout the area while I search for Luce. Don’t show any mercy to the Vampires. Though if I find here alive, then I will contact you guys because maybe just maybe we can be a little more lenient with the vampires as they obviously will of kept my mate safe’ I say simply relaying information I knew they already knew. But they weren’t fussed, they just nodded in agreement. So after a quick drink from the lake we took off once more towards the vampire’s lair. My nose close to the ground, determined to pick up that oh so yummy scent of my mate.
Halfway there, I picked up the one scent I’d been trying to locate for months and just the smell of it sent my wolf into frenzy. ‘Mate! MATE! We have to get mate’ My wolf screamed in my mind and pushed me forward more. ‘Like that is not what I’m doing’ I snapped back at him. A little cruel I know because I did truly understand his urgency but he wasn’t half irritating with it. ‘Luce is here. Her scent is around this area and leading towards our destination, and its not too weak so she’s obviously been around here recently. Which means its likely she is alive. So less blood thirst might be needed’ I sent through the pack link and received a chorus of ok’s from the members. I nodded once and pushed forward. Determination sweeping through my head and brain. Luce would be in my arms once more in just a few hours. I would see that it happened. ‘Okay, we are here, pan out like planned and look around. I’m going to get my mate. And guys be careful’ I sent before creeping towards the outside of the lair. Well I say lair, it didn’t actually look any different to the pack house if I’m honest, which honestly I found a little strange. I mean where was the dungeons and moats? Or was that just being too stereotypical? Oh I don’t know and this is getting off topic. I stopped a little way back from the front door, still in the woods slightly. Well enough that there was still trees lined in front of me leading towards the house. Which granted wasn’t a great mansion like the pack house, but it was no less elegant and large all the same. I paused for a moment contemplating the best way to go about this. Because right now my wolf just wanted to barge straight through the front door and take back what was ours. But I wasn’t so sure that was the safest option. But before I had time to make my mind up the very person I was searching for emerged from the tree line causing me to jump and look around in shock.
