~ Your POV ~I sat on my bed, looking at the tiny object in my hand. My heart clenched as I turned it between my fingers, running over all its indents and etchings. I grabbed it by the chain and watched as it dangled in front of my face. It shone in the morning sunlight. The object was a locket; Mikoto gave it to me before he died; right in front of me. Tears formed in my eyes as I remembered the scene.
(Flashback)
"Mikoto!" I called, running over to his body, laid out on the ground. I had injuries of my own, but they weren't going to stop me from getting to him, he was our king, I could never just let him die like this.
I reached him and fell to my knees, instantly applying pressure to his wound that was pouring blood.
"Oh god, oh god." I repeated frantically. "What do I do? Here, um, I-I'll wrap it up." I started to tear a piece of fabric from my shirt, anything to postpone the bleeding.
His hands stopped my fumbling ones and held them tightly.
"(Y/N), Don't bother. W-we know I exceeded my limit." He stopped to take a breath, and I began to cry. "I-I'm going to die here." He finished, his voice cracking.
"No, no no, you're our king! You can't d-die like t-this." I tried to smile, reassure him that it was okay, but I couldn't stop my sobbing. I couldn't even reassure myself.
"Here, t-take this." He shakily handed me a locket, it was bloody, but I could make out some of its intricate designs, and the way the gold shimmered.
"What's this?" I asked, taking it from him and examining it carefully.
"You'll know when its time." His words were fading; he smiled weakly at me and gripped my hand tightly before he let go of me completely, and his battered body fell limp.
"N-no, Mikoto!" I yelled, grabbing at his hand again and holding it to my face.
"We can't lose you, what will we do without you?" I cried. Red flames erupted around us, I felt a stinging on my shoulder and watched helplessly as a red ember rose from my skin into the sky, along with others off in the distance.
I stayed there for a while, taking the whole situation in, it was hard and everything hurt.
Eventually, I stood up and began making my way back to where the clan was waiting. I knew they would be devastated, hell I was too, but how could I help make it better? How would we get back up after this?
(End of Flashback)
I clutched the locket tightly in my hand, instead of moping around remembering such shitty things, I was ready to show the rest of HOMRA what was inside the little object. I trudged downstairs to where everyone else was hanging around.
"Hey, Izumo," He glanced at me notably, "get everyone together, there's something I need to show everyone."
"Alright." He replied, nodding slightly.
After a few minutes, all the members of the clan were surrounding me, I took a deep breath and spoke,
"Mikoto gave me this locket right before he died." I took a minute to look at everybody. Their faces displayed shock.
"What? Why didn't you tell us?" Masaomi said skeptically.
"I didn't know if it was the right time, but I've hidden it for long enough."
I opened my hand and revealed the locket, I popped open the front and passed it around, showing everyone what was inside. Silence filled the room as each person got to look at it. They all had a smile on their face upon seeing the picture. It was of all of us, as a family laughing with each other, everyone was grinning, even Mikoto.
"I think he means by this that he wants us to move on, to rebuild what was lost." I said quietly, playing with my fingertips.
"He and Tatara would have never wanted us to fall apart like this."
The tense feeling in the room diminished and the clan agreed.
"We won't end like this." Yata said decisively, his fists tightening.
"Yeah!"
"They are right..."
"Let's do this!"
Excited chatter broke out throughout the bar, we could do this.
"We have to find a new king, somebody who would be fit for the role of course." I mumbled, placing a hand under my chin.
Suddenly people began to move aside as a little body began to push through the mass of the crowd. She stopped in front of me and looked up,
"Can I help?" she asked, determination laced her voice.
My hands fell from my face and I leaned down,
"You were with Mikoto all the time, weren't you?" I said, feeling my insides twist and turn excitedly. She merely nodded, and that was enough for us.
Our clan isn't the same without Mikoto or Tatara, but we manage, we don't plan to lose anyone else anytime soon. We have a bond thicker then blood.
