Lunchtime was Calum's least favourite part of the school day, because Ashton insisted on sitting with Luke, who was never seen very far from Michael, and although Calum had other friends, they all sat at the same table as them anyway, so he couldn't escape from Michael if he wanted to. If he tried to ignore Michael, he was sure the obnoxiously loud boy would make it extra hard for him to do so. It was like he hated Calum, but also wanted his attention as much as possible, so he could annoy the dark haired boy into wanting to punch every inch of his smug face.
"Hey Calum," Thomas, the school's football team captain said, sliding into the seat next to Calum. "I want you to come to training tonight, even if you're not on the team. It would be great to have you coaching."
"I'm sure he would love to, but Calum and I are busy tonight." Michael smirked, sitting down across from them.
"Cause I would love to spend time with you over football," Calum replied sarcastically, shooting him a glare.
"You don't have a choice pretty boy, we've got detention, remember."
"They're really giving us a detention together. The reason we're in there is because we were fighting,"Calum groaned, throwing his fork down on his plate. "It's a bit stupid making two people that hate each other sit in a room with each other for two hours."
"Hate's a strong word Hood," Michael pouted, clutching his heart dramatically.
"Not strong enough," Calum muttered, before turning back to Thomas. "Looks like I can't do training this week, maybe next week yeah?"
"Sure, no problem."
"We're finally going to get some alone time," Michael gushed in a high pitched voice, twirling a strand of his bright red hair around his finger, fluttering his eyelashes. Everyone around them sniggered quietly, including Ashton who hid his face in his arm, avoiding eye contact with Calum.
"The only type of alone time you're ever going to get from anyone," Calum retorted, smiling sweetly at him.
"Ooohhhhh," the entire table chorused as Michael's face fell momentarily. He quickly brought a smile back onto his face. Ashton grinned at his best friend, who was eating his lunch like nothing had happened. The Calum he was used to was back, making sassy comments and bringing Michael down for a bit, instead of getting angry. Ashton preferred this Calum, not only did he get a good laugh out of it, but he also knew that Calum was feeling okay and not worried or stressed about anything. He looked out for his best friend, he looked out for all of his friends. It was just what Ashton did.
A quiet chatter fell across the table as small groups of people started conversations among themselves. Ashton was currently talking to Thomas about training that night, Luke was talking to another member of the football team, and everyone else was involved in some sort of conversation. Except Calum and Michael, who were sitting in silence, glaring at each other with a look of loathing in their eyes.
"Not so popular now you've been kicked off the football team, are you pretty boy?" Calum didn't retort, he didn't have anything to comeback with. Michael grinned wickedly, sensing a weakness.
"I've never understood football, and why it's so popular. All it is, is grown men or teenage boys kicking a ball between two posts. A five year old could of that, yet they get praised for doing it. They can't even handle an injury."
"You do realise your mouthing off about football, a) at someone who doesn't care if you don't like it and b) a table full of footballers," Calum said monotonously, raising an eyebrow at Michael.
