"You're what?" Ashton exclaimed down the phone. "Calum, that means you're off the team."
"Yeah, I know," Calum sighed, leaning against his bedroom wall. "But if you think about it, I get two weeks without Michael bugging me constantly, plus, I don't have to sit through shitty classes like you do."
"Calum, you're our best player, we'll lose the cup without you."
"Nonsense, you are the best goalie I've ever seen, nothing gets past you. I'm sure the team will manage without me for a bit."
"A bit! It's at least 6 months Cal." Ashton shouted down the phone, making Calum hold it away from his ear. "How are you so chill about this?"
"Because I got some pretty good punches in," Calum smirked," and two weeks off school."
"You got suspended, kicked off the team and a weeks worth of detention."
"You're beginning to sound like my mum Ash," Calum laughed."Football is not that important."
"This isn't about football anymore. You're not even sorry. You can't go around punching people just because they piss you off Calum. You'll get arrested. You can't do anything with your life with a criminal record,"Ashton said angrily.
"Are you seriously mad at me?"
"Yes I am Calum. It's only one month into the school year and you've already got yourself suspended."
"I don't understand why you're mad, it was Michael I hit, not you."
"You know what, fuck this. I'll see you when you come back," Ashton muttered and hung up.
"Drama queen," Calum sighed, throwing his phone down on his bed. He rested his head against the wall, staring up at the ceiling. He wasn't the type of person that went around punching people for fun, and Ashton knew that. Michael just frustrated him past thinking rationally. Yes, he was proud of himself for getting some good punches in, but only because he thought Michael deserved it. He wasn't proud of getting suspended, he wasn't happy he was off the team, but he was and there was nothing he or Ashton could do about it, so he might as well take the punishment without a fuss.
Besides, being suspended was nothing compared to how he knew his mother would react when she got home from work, in less than 5 minutes time. She and Karen, Michaels mother, we're best friends and it killed her to know that their sons would never get along. They had tried to force them to be civil but neither had been able to stick to their promise.
"CALUM THOMAS HOOD! GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE NOW AND EXPLAIN YOURSELF!" Joy screamed upstairs to her son as soon as she closed the door behind her. Calum dragged himself off of his bed, rolling his eyes and made his way down stairs, walking as slowly as possible to delay the upcoming argument. They had the same one every time he and Michael fought.
"YOU GOT SUSPENDED?" Joy yelled as soon as Calum came through the kitchen door.
"Yeah, eh...sorry mum?" He said, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.
"SORRY MUM,IS THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY FOR YOURSELF?"
"He provoked me mum,"Calum argued, "You know that I don't go around punching people often."
"What did he do to provoke you exactly?" Joy asked, raising her eyebrow expectantly.
"Erm..., he was there?" Calum lied, avoiding his mother's gaze. He knew that he couldn't tell her the real reason and he was never very good at thinking of cover stories.
