"Hey Mum." Michael said as he wandered into the living room after school.
"Hey Michael, how was school?" Karen asked, smiling up at him from the sofa.
"Boring as usual." Michael replied dismissively, leaning on the arm of the sofa. "I'm glad there's only a year left and then I'm free."
"Yeah, free to be weighed down by adult responsibilities and commitments."
"Thank you for ruining my joy. Great to see that you didn't lose your mood killing abilities." Michael told her sarcastically, sliding off the arm of the sofa into the seat next to his mum. Karen put her arm around his shoulder and hugged him.
"As, did I hurt your feelings? I'm sorry." She pouted in a baby voice. Michael rolled his eyes and allowed his mother to continuing hugging him as they watched the TV.
"That's a nice ring." Michael stated 10 minutes later, examining the ring on his mother's finger. "Where'd you get that from?"
"Sam gave it to me."
All of the muscles in Michael's body tensed. He turned his head slowly to look at Karen, his mouth hanging open in disbelief.
"Yo-You're not-" Michael stuttered, looking between his mother's face and the ring. "Please tell me your not-" Karen nodded excitedly, unable to control the grin that spread across her face.
"Sam proposed?" Michael stated, blinking related at his mum.
"Yeah, on holiday. It was so romantic-"
"Sam proposed to you while you were away and you're only telling me now? You've been back for four days!" Michael exclaimed, moving away from his mum so he could stand up without accidentally smacking her in the face.
"We wanted to see how long it would take for you to notice." Karen explained calmly, watching her son's facial expression change from shocked to angry.
"Yes, because this is a great way for me to find out. Not telling your son you're getting married is a brilliant idea, let him work it out on his own."
"I thought you'd be pleased." Karen said quietly.
"I am pleased Mum. It's about time but...why didn't you tell me?" Michael said in a slightly snappy tone. "You've told me everything else about your fucking holiday, yet you leave out the most important fucking part!"
"I'm sorry Michael."
"Congratulations by the way." Michael told her, before storming out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
When he reached his bedroom, he threw himself down on his bed, running his hands through his hair angrily. Wasn't he, as her son, entitled to be the told straight away that she was getting married and not left to guess why his mother was suddenly wearing a diamond ring on her finger? He thought he and his mother were close, as close as a 17 year old boy and their mother could be, but apparently they weren't close enough.
Michael grabbed his phone from his pocket, and without thinking called the first person in his recent calls.
"Michael?" Thomas said as soon as he picked up. "What do you want buddy?"
"A punchbag."
"Unfortunately, Calum is busy right now helping me with the football practice." Thomas told him sarcastically. In the background, Michael heard Calum sassing some poor player on the team for not cooperating.
