"Did you sleep at all last light?" Ashton asked as soon as he sat down in Biology the next morning.
"A little bit, but it wasn't great." Calum yawned, resting his head on his arms.
"Why?"
"Because my body hates me and wanted to stay awake." Calum replied grumpily. Ashton frowned, knowing that his best friend was lying to him but decided to leave him alone. Sleepy Calum meant grumpy Calum and he did not want to be on the receiving end of that.
Calum stared sleepily around the classroom, his eyelids drooping as he forced himself to stay awake. His entire demeanour was sleepy and slouched as he blinked repeatedly to keep his eyes open.
That was until Michael walked in.
Calum's whole body tensed, his lazy eyes became wide and locked with Michael's. He swallowed nervously. Michael kept his eyes on Calum, who seemed to be pleaded with Michael without speaking. Michael tore his gaze away, heading towards his seat at the back of the class. Calum's relaxed again, slowly sinking back into his sleep deprived state.
"What was that about?" Ashton asked, burrowing his eyebrows in confusion.
"Doesn't matter." Calum mumbled, shooting Michael a glare. Ashton grew even more confused, but noticed that Calum was almost asleep next to him. He slumped back in his chair just as the teacher walked in, and the lesson began.
---------------------------------------------
Calum's day went slowly. He walked around school like a zombie, his eyes half shut and his brain not functioning fully. He had been muttering nonsensical things all day. However, every time he came across Michael in the corridor or class, he was fully aware of what he was doing or saying. Not that he'd said much.
Calum was washing his hands in the sink in the second floor bathroom, when Michael walked through the door. Calum immediately tensedwhen he spotted him in the mirror, his hands still as the water splashed over his hands.
"Hey." Michael said quietly. Calum forced himself to smile, baring his teeth awkwardly. "I-erm-Are you still mad at me?"
"What do you think Clifford?" Calum spat, removing his hands from the water and turning to face him. Michael grimaced, and looked at his feet.
"Look Calum. I'm really sorry. I really shouldn't have made you tell me, it was out of line and well-holy shit dude, I wasn't expecting that."
"I swear if you will anyone about this, I will not hesitate to join him, clear." Calum growled, glaring at Michael.
"Crystal, I won't tell a soul." Michael replied, taking a small step backwards.
"Better not."
"I promise Calum, I won't tell anybody, not even Luke. I couldn't do that to anyone, not even you."
They stood staring at each other for a minute in silence, water dripping from Calum's hands.
"Are you coming home tonight?" Calum asked, breaking the silence. Michael raised his eyebrow, baffled by Calum's question.
"Well considering my Mum is still on holiday, no I don't think I am going home."
"I..I meant like- my house- but..I'm going to stop talking." Calum stuttered.
"Do you want me to?" Michael asked quietly, noticing Calum's awkwardness.
Looking away in embarrassment, Calum nodded. Michael would never admit it, but he was glad Calum said that. He'd missed staying at Calum's too, and their petty little arguments that, after their most recent argument, were quite pathetic.
"Then I'll come home."
"I feel like you're mocking me." Calum stated, narrowing his eyes at Michael.
"Me, mock you? Never." Michael replied sarcastically, placing his hand over his heart. Calum stuck his tongue out, trying to hold back the grin that was spreading across his face.
"I'll still hate you by the way." Calum added.
"Sure you do buddy."
"I mean it."
"You couldn't hate me if you tried." Michael smirked, twirling his hair round his finger.
"Watch me."
"Whatever you say Hood."
---------------------------------------------
When Calum and Michael walked into the lunch hall behind each other with smiles on their faces, Ashton and Luke shot each other bewildered looks and eyed them suspiciously. Even before they fell out, they never got along, so he and Luke, who had witnessed them fighting only the day before, were stunned.
"Are the both of you feeling okay?" Luke asked, placing his hand on Michael's forehead. "Have you been possessed by demons? I don't think I've ever seen you two smile in each others presence before."
"Stop with the dramatics Lukey." Michael said, swatting his hand away.
"He had a point." Ashton pointed out. "First period today you were literally having a silent standoff in the middle of the classroom and now you're sitting side by side like you've been best buddies all your lives."
"Maybe we were mature about the situation and-" Calum began only to be interrupted by Michael.
"-made out in the bathroom."
"Not where I was going with that." Calum muttered, glaring at him.
"Did you?" Luke asked.
"No." Calum said at the same time as Michael said the opposite. Calum kicked him under the table, slamming his heel into Michael's shin.
"Ow, what was that for?!"
"Being a horny asshole."
"That's just what you do to me Hood, I can't control it when I'm around you."
"I'm beginning to regret being nice to you." Calum groaned, holding his head in his hands. Luke and Ashton glanced at each other and shrugged, neither knowing what the hell was going on. They had just adjusted to them not talking at all, and now they had gone back to the way they were before and Ashton and Luke had no idea how to handle it.
"Then don't be, I really wouldn't mind." Michael smirked, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Okay, too far." Luke exclaimed, putting his hand over Michael's mouth. "No one wants to hear about what you get up to in your free time."
Michael threw his head back and laughed, which made Ashton start laughing too, followed by Luke and then Calum. The rest of the people at their table give them weird looks, but they were finding Luke's comment far too funny to care.
When they finally stopped laughing, the bell rang and they headed to their 5th period classes.
"I have a detention tonight, but I'll see you at "home"." Michael said to Calum, earning another smack from the younger boy. Michael just laughed and disappeared in the opposite direction.
Maybe Ashton would get his 5 dollars after all.
This is shit. I'm sick and I'm writing this at 11 because I really want to get it up today. I'm sorry for the quality.
