The sound of tires screaming still echoed in his mind, even as he sat in the ER wing of the hospital waiting for word of how Dante was doing. Dante had been so pale when they took him away... he looked like a ghost, it was terrifying to see. But the worst part of it wall was that deep down Laurence knew that this was all his fault. If he had just let Gene have his way with him then maybe none of this would have happened. Maybe Gene wouldn't have felt the way he did... maybe he wouldn't have tried to run them all down... maybe Dante wouldn't be dying in the hospital. This was all his fault... Gene had likely been trying to hit him and just hit Dante on accident...
He was alone for the longest time, with no news on Dante, who was in the operating room where Doctors were trying to save his life. Every moment that passed made him feel sick and blame himself even more. That was until a woman around the age of 25 walked over; her dark brown hair in a high ponytail that still allowed the tail to brush her lower back, her skin a shade lighter than Aphmau's and her eyes a violet purple. Laurence could tell just by looking at her she was a detective, then again the badge on her hip was kind of a dead-give-away.
"Laurence Zvahl?" She said, sitting next to him holding a first aid kit on her arms.
"Y-yes?"
"My name is Agent Moore, I work for the Phoenix Drop Police Department and I was put on your case."
"M-my case?" Laurence asked, letting her lift up his arm, as she cleaned the road rash he had gotten when Dante pushed him out of the way. He honestly hadn't felt it until now but he could tell that it had been bleeding thanks to the stains on the chair and on the floor.
"Yes. Your case. See, I am put on every case that involves the Shadow Knights and it's members. Primarily, Gene. He was the one who hit your friend, correct?"
"Y-yes ma'am..." Laurence looked at his feet, "He was... I thinking he was aiming for me though... I don't think he meant to hit Dante."
"Dante? Gene's brother?"
"Yes..."
"I see, yes... he was probably not after his brother. Gene is a lot of things but he has never been the type of person to harm his brother, especially not Dante. Those two are very close." She looked at Laurence, then frowned. "Are you the boy who was attacked at the Fall Fair?"
Laurence looked at her, shocked as he began to feel sick to his stomach. "H-how did you hear about that?"
"I have a spy in the Shadow Knights." She answered honestly, "They told me Gene was planning an attack during the Fall Fair, but everybody was kept out of the loop so I didn't know who was the target. They were only told to wander around the fair until he found them... I am sorry for whatever Gene did."
"He um... he didn't do anything. My friends managed to help me before anything bad happened." He explained and the girl smiled, making the feeling the Laurence knew her that much stronger.
"I'm glad." She said, then looked up at the door as Aaron and Aphmau jogged in, with Nicole right behind them. She dug into her pocket pulling out a card and handing it to him. "Call me if Gene or any of the Shadow Knights cause you trouble." She got to her feet, then walked out of the ER leaving the four friends alone.
"What happened?!" Nicole sobbed, grabbing Laurence's shoulders.
"Us boys were on our way home from dinner and... Gene... he just drove at us without warning. He didn't even try to stop, he was going to kill all of us. Dante managed to push us out of the way... b-but... he was hit. I-I'm so so sorry, this is all my fault."
"Laurence..." Aphmau sat next to him, finishing the job the Detective had started, bandaging up his arm. "None of this is your fault. You couldn't have known that Gene was going to do something like this. Hell he has no reason to keep hurting you in the first place."
Laurence sniffled, "Yes he does... if I had just let him... If I just let him have his way at the fair then he wouldn't be coming after me now! Don't you see, if I had just gave in then none of this would have happened!"
A fast swing of a hand made contact with Laurence's face, startling the brunette as well as everybody else as Nicole stood there, panting angrily.
"This is not your fault, Laurence!" Nicole yelled, "None of this is your fault! Gene is a jerk, and a pervert and while I may not know what he did to you I know that it hurt you! You don't deserve to be hurt, and the fact that Gene would go after you like that without a good reason is ridiculous! Damn it Laurence, don't you realize that we don't blame you for anything that's happened! You're our friend Laurence and we love you! Please... stop blaming yourself... please..."
Laurence frowned, pulling Nicole into a gentle hug, "You're right... I'm sorry... I'll try and stop."
"That's all we ask." Aaron said calmly.
