It had just passed 1 AM when the sound of a phone echoed through the entire house, waking up three of the four roommates. One of which, was Laurence who angrily grumbled before forcing himself out of his comfortable bed. He complained a few times about people calling this late but left his bedroom anyways and went to the kitchen.
The phone sat on the counter in it's small charging station and seeing the light flashing made him hesitate. The four of them had watched a horror movie before bed; a movie where the Killer would call people before he murdered them. It kind of scared him to think that stuff could happen like that could happen to them, especially him considering he was the one who was answering the phone.
He chucked to himself and shook his head, he was being silly. He picked up the phone, pushed the "answer" button and brought it to his ear.
"Hello?" He said, his voice thick with sleep.
"Yes, is Laurence Zvahl there?" Asked a man on the other side of the line, his voice sounded familiar.
"Depends. Who is this?" Laurence asked, knowing that only a few people knew his last name made his frown. He was honestly worried to tell anybody that he was the one talking.
"This is Vincent, I work for Lord Hayden of New Meteli. This is Laurence, is it not?"
Laurence knew Vincent, so he relaxed only slight. "Is... is my father alright?" He asked, his voice hardly coming out, though it was void of all confidence. Even though he could see Dante and Travis coming around him curiously.
"No, I'm afraid not. You and your sister should come to New Meteli, Your father... he was poisoned last night during dinner... He looks as though he will survive but it would be for the best if you guys come to his side in case he doesn't, also we're concerned about you and your sister's Health. You could be easily targeted."
"What?! Poisoned?! By Who?!"
"We don't know, but clues suggest that it was somebody from Phoenix Drop."
Laurence clenched his fist before bringing it down hard on the counter, "Damn it, I'll be on the next train. Have you called Cadenza?"
"No Sir."
"Good, I'd like to be the one to tell her. She'll take it better if it comes from me. Thank you for the call, Vincent, take care of our Father until we get there." Laurence said, then turned of the phone, slamming it hard on the counter with a curse.
"Laurence? You okay?" Asked Dante as Laurence turned and walked to the door to get his shoes.
"I-I... No I need to go see Cadenza."
"What's going on?" Travis asked, both boys watching as the shirtless boy slipped on his shoes.
"Our Father... he's in the hospital. I need to go get Cadenza, we have to go see him. If he doesn't make it Meteli will need us." Laurence said, tapping the toes of his shoes on the floor, before he opened the door and took off running in the direction of Cadenza's house, leaving the door open.
He didn't want to waste any time, they needed to get to their Father, they needed him and he needed them. He didn't want to say goodbye, but he was going to be there if goodbye was the only thing to say.
A short run later, Laurence was pounding on the door to Cadenza and Lucinda's house. It felt as though somebody had a hold of his heart and was squeezing the life out of him, which was more than a little scary for him, but the pain made him forget the fear.
Lucinda opened the door, staph in her hand as she was ready to attack whoever was at the door, but the look on Laurence's face made her cautious look become worried. "Laurence?"
"Where." He panted, "Where is Cadenza?"
"In her room, she's sleeping-"
"I need to see her, It's important." Laurence said, sweat dripping down his face.
Lucinda frowned, but backed up and let him in. Laurence didn't hesitate as he walked into the house and then made his way up the stairs to his sisters bedroom, giving himself a mental pep-talk as he knocked on the door. Luckily, Cadenza was already half-awake, likely from the abuse he just gave her front door.
She opened the door and looked at him worriedly. "Laurence, what's happened?"
"C-Cadenza." He sniffled, tears breaking free of their prison as they ran down his face, "I-It's Father..."
