The train rocked as it went down the rather old tracks and drowned out the conversation from most of the passengers that were talking on the other side o the car. Yet, Laurence's group was already pretty quiet, obviously not being in a "Talkative" mood. The Lord of New Meteli, Laurence and Cadenza's father, had been poisoned and nobody knew who did it.
Cadenza glanced at Laurence, who was staring out the window, lost in his thoughts as he held her hand protectively. He had been silent since they got on the train a few hours ago. It was worrying, especially when it was clear he had so many thoughts going through his head.
"Are you and your Father close?" Wondered Travis, who had been the one who called Aphmau, Aaron and Katelyn to join the already large group.
"Huh?" Cadenza snapped out of her trance and looked away from her brother, "Oh, yeah. Well kinda, he adopted us when Laurence and I were younger. I was six and Laurence was five. So before him we were used to going from home to home. Even after we were adopted we were both convinced we were going to be sent away, especially Laurence... he was so scared..." She glanced at Laurence, who said nothing and just stared lifelessly out the window. "The constant fear of abandonment made it hard for both of us but that only made it more meaningful for us when he would go out of his way to spend time with us... it just made us love and trust him even more, you know?"
The group nodded, and to the shock of the entire group Laurence spoke up. "He saved my life."
"What?! When?!" Cadenza said, sounding seriously surprised.
Laurence sighed, looking down at his hands. "Before he adopted me... I was in a pretty bad home. I was the youngest Orphan in the home and the older kids would take it out on me. The wound hit me, push me around, and once locked me in a closet for two days and nobody noticed... I was going to run away the day he came to the orphanage. There was no way I would have survived out there all alone, so when he chose me... I was scared I would make him mad and that he would send me back there. Back to a place that would eventually kill me... Though, coming back home to Cadenza and Hayden... seeing them everyday, seeing their kindness... it made me not want to give up and made me determined to be the best son I could be."
His friends looked at each other then back at Laurence.
"I'm sorry about your dad, Laurence." Garroth said, watching as Laurence clenched his fist.
"I-it hurts... b-but I mean, it's not for sure that he's going to... I mean he could be fine when we get here, it's mostly a concern about Cadenza and I being there in case he..." Laurence cleared his throat, "But I won't give up on Hayden, after all he didn't give up on me."
