"I'm telling you, Abi, that is not Mason!" I argued, leaning onto the table. Abi sat across from me, looking up and down the menu on what to order.

Abi sighed. "Sammie, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe he's just too busy lately," she answered without looking up from the menu.

"No, that's not it. Have you seen how he looks? And he's avoiding me!" I yelled.

"Shhh," Abi frowned at me. "We're still in a restaurant with a bunch of humans around. Calm down." I let out a tiny growl, causing Abi's frown to deepen. "Are you sure he's avoiding you?"

I nodded. "Abi, have you seen us together whatsoever for the last two weeks?" Abi didn't answer me. "And every time we're in the same room, he leaves and refuses to look or talk to me. He's never in his bedroom in the morning, and he doesn't go to his bedroom till late at night. Something is up."

Abi sighed again. "Okay, Sammie. Fine. But still, I don't what to tell you. Now, what are you going to order?"

I looked down at the menu. The waitress came to our table and asked for our orders. "I'll have a grilled turkey sandwich with a side of fries, please," Abi said. "And can I have a coke to drink?"

"Sure, and for you?" The waitress asked, turning to me.

"Um..." I looked back down at the menu. "I'll have a mushroom burger with provolone cheese, a side of fries, and a sweet tea to drink, please."

The waitress nodded, took our menus, and left. I sighed and put my hands on either side of my head. "I don't know what to do, Abi."

"Listen, Sammie. I don't know what's going on between you and Mason, and I do care because you two are my friends and I know you two like each other. However-"

"Woah, woah, woah," I cut her off. "What are you talking about we like each other? Of course, we are best friends. But I have a feeling that you're talking about the other type of like." I narrowed my eyes suspiciously while Abi smirked.

"Haven't you ever read a love story before?" She asked.

I nodded. "Yes, actually, I've read a lot of them, but what does that have to do with anything?"

"Because it's obvious that you and Mason like each other very much. And you say you've read a lot of romance stories; however, you can't even tell when you're in love with a guy."

I covered my mouth to muffle my laughter. "OMG, are you serious, Abi? Me and Mason? Oh my gosh, that's...that's just ridiculous. He's just my best friend. And I'm his." Suddenly, my smile faded. "Well, I was."

Abi frowned at me sadly. "Come on, you should get your mind off of that. Things will correct themselves in due time," she said encouragingly.

I gave a small smile. Right at that moment, the waitress came back with our food. I picked at my burger, only taking small bits and eating a few fries. I ended up taking most of my food to go.

We drove in silence back to the pack house. I laid my arm on the car door and rested my head on it as the wind blew through my hair. I took a deep breath as a single tear fell down my cheek.

Back at the pack house, Abi left to go do something while I put my food in the fridge. I sighed and walked out the back door.

Outside, a group of werewolves were gathered, all pack warriors. "Hey, Sammie," Alex greeted me. He was a young pack warrior, only two years older than me. "Want to join the patrol?"

I thought about it for a minute and nodded. I went to stand with the group as they prepared to start the patrol. Finally, we shifted and took off running.

As I ran, my thoughts about Mason dissipated into the fresh air. Instincts took over, my protective nature surfacing. My human side disappeared. All I was now was a wolf, a warrior, a protector.

The muscles in my legs worked as I ran; the wind whipped through the grey and white fur. My brown eyes sharpened, and my ears became alert. My nose picked up every little scent of the forest, every flower, animal, and creature.

My patrol ran as one, a group of wolves that all had the purpose to protect and serve their pack. I grinned, my lips curling back slightly. I felt free at this moment. I felt like I had a purpose, like nothing could stop me.

But then all of it, everything, just disappeared as I felt the smooth touch of metal against my skin. I looked down at my leg to see a metal chain wrapped around my ankle. On it was a small little charm of a howling wolf with a crescent moon. On the back was a metal plate with a message that meant the world to me. It was the one thing that I wore that wouldn't disappear when I shifted.

That night Mason and I had howled at the moon together, I had seen it around my ankle. Mason had told me it was made of a special wolf metal that made it not disappear when I shifted, so I always had it with me. And it would always remind me of him.

Images flashed in front of my mind. Memories of when I would touch the little charm when I was alone, upset, sad, or mad, especially when I woke up in the middle of the night from nightmares of when I was back in the dungeon being tortured. But the charm would always remind me of him, just like he said it would, and I would feel better.

And it did just that. It reminded me of him. My wolf nature shrank back, and I felt my human emotions rise back to the surface. Before I knew what was happening, I was tumbling across the ground.

I landed on the ground with a yelp as the patrol stopped and surrounded me. Questions rose all around me, asking if I was okay. I raised my head and shook it to clear it. "What happened?" I asked.

"You tripped on a rock," Alex explained, looking at me with concern. "Are you alright?"

I nodded. "I'm fine. Just...can't think straight." I shook my head again as I stumbled to my feet.

"Sammie, how about you head back to the pack house? We'll continue the patrol," one of the warriors, Haden, suggested.

"O-okay," I said, hanging my head. The warriors nodded and continued the patrol as I watched after them. I sighed and began to pad back to the pack house.

I was almost back to the pack house when I saw him. Why was life so intent on torturing me? But I wasn't going to just ignore him like he did to me. I was going to get to the bottom of this.

I stood up straighter, my eyes became hard, and I padded forward confidently, my tail held high. I barked in a demanding tone, "Mason!"

The big brown wolf turned around to stare at me with a pair of ice cold eyes that were both foreign and familiar to me as I approached. But what he did, I never would have seen coming, and it stopped me right in my tracks. It made me tremble, my tail fell, and my ears flattened in fear. He bared his teeth at me and growled.
