"Mason?" I whispered. Mason smiled at me.
"Well...we best be going then," Abi said behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see Abi and Alex retreating to the car.
"Wait...where are you guys going?" I asked.
They smiled at me, not saying a word as they hopped into the car and drove away. Mason chuckled. "It's fine. They're just going to go do their own thing." I looked at him confused. "Because this evening is just for you and me."
Suddenly, I realized what was going on. I looked around at the beautiful clearing. Flowers and lanterns hung from the branches of the trees, but the lanterns were still off since the sun was just beginning to set. Off to the side of the clearing was a little table with a pearl white cloth draped over the top and candles in the center.
Mason gestured towards it. He pulled out a chair for me before he went to the other side to sit down as well. In front of me was a glass plate with Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo.
I looked at Mason with a raised eyebrow. He chuckled at me. "Your mom made it. I knew it was your favorite."
My smile brightened. "Thank you." He nodded, and we dug into our meal. We mostly ate in silence, occasional conversations coming up every once in a while.
By the time we were done, the moon had risen into the sky and the stars were shining brightly above, bathing the clearing in white light as well as the soft, yellow glow of the lanterns.
Suddenly, soft music began to play. I recognized the song immediately. It was A Thousand Years by Christina Perry.
Mason stood up and came to my side. "May I have this dance?"
I smiled up at him. I stood up and curtsied. "You may." We linked arms and walked a little bit away from the table before Mason turned to me, placing one hand in mine and the other on my waist.
"You look beautiful, Sammie," Mason complemented.
I tilted my head to the side. "And you look quite handsome in that tux as well." Mason chuckled at me.
We danced for a minute in a silence. Mason spun me gently before pulling me back to him. "What is all this about?" I asked.
Mason smiled at me. "It's all for you. It took a little while, a little longer than I had expected."
The realization hit me right then and there. "This is what you were doing for the last few days. This was why you were so busy, why you couldn't hang out with me."
Mason frowned sadly. "Yeah...I'm sorry about that, Sammie. I just wanted this to be a surprise."
I smirked. "Why are you apologizing for that? Mason, this is amazing! It's beautiful." I smiled warmly at him.
"Do you like it?"
I frowned. "No...I don't like it." Mason's face fell, and he almost froze completely if I hadn't smiled and hugged him. "I love it."
Mason's arms wrapped around me. "Hey, Sammie," he started nervously.
"Yeah?"
"I'm your best friend, right?"
I pulled back to look at him with furrowed eyebrows. "Of course, you are. Why would you ask me that?"
Mason's ice blue eyes stared into my intensely. I almost couldn't breath under his stare. "Is that all I am to you? Your best friend?"
