Chapter 21
Linc paced around the waiting room. Jane has been in surgery for almost three hours and the doctors are still in there.
They already contacted her dad and are on their way to the hospital. He already called Alice's house and was said that she's safe and sound.
He also called Wesley who was sitting at the row of plastic chairs, his face a complete mirror on Linc's.
Linc expected Wesley to blow up, beat him up for putting Jane in danger. But surprisingly, the boy just looked at him with disappointment clear on his face.
The pale green doors bursted open and Tom walked in with panicked look on his face, "Where is she?!" he demanded.
Wesley stood up, "Still in surgery, Mr. Rome."
Tom looked at Linc and all his fury ignited, "This is all your fault!" he shouted and lunged to Linc, but Wesley held on him, "My daughter wouldn't be in there, fighting for her life if it weren't for you!"
Like Linc didn't know that. He's been spending the last three hours blaming himself.
If it weren't for his own selfishness, he and Jane would still be together and they would be happy.
He remembered what Jane last said to him when they last talked.
"I'm really sorry for what happened to us, Linc. What we had was wonderful while it lasted. But I'm tired of hanging on the thin thread."
Then he asked himself, Would Jane be tired of hanging on a thin thread and stop fighting for her life?
He shook his head. No. Jane is a fighter. She would fight and fight for her life.
Tom finally stopped struggling against Wesley and sat down tiredly at the chair, "I can't lose her." he whispered.
Just then, the doors of the operating room open and a doctor on green scrubs walked out.
"Family of Jane Rome?" Tom shot up from his seat and rushed to the doctor, Wesley and Linc followed suit.
"I'm her father, Tomas Rome." he said, the doctor nodded, "How is she?"
"Well, we got the bullet. But she's still in critical condition, her liver is badly damaged. We still need to do other tests and see what we can do about it." then the doctor left.
Tom leaned at the wall, letting the news sink in.
The pale green doors bursted open again, Alice was rushing in. Behind her are Danny, Teddy, and Edgar.
"Ali, could you at least please rest for a while?" Edgar said.
"Where is she?" she demanded, Tom looked at the door where the doctor got out from, Alice gulped, "What's her condition?"
"Critical." Wesley said, seeing that Tom was still unable to formulate words.
Alice felt her heart sink, her knees buckled but Danny and Teddy caught her just in time and helped her stand.
Linc watched Alice fell apart, her face looks much older now. Like what happened tonight took ten years out of her face.
Danny held on Alice and let her cry, she turned and held him. Sobbing loudly, his dark blue t-shirt already drenched in tears. He rubbed circles at her back to help her calm down a bit.
He didn't know how important Jane was to Alice, but he assumed that she was important enough to make Alice cry, which she doesn't do a lot.
Teddy looked at his sister, then he turned his head to Edgar who had a concern look on his face.
