Chapter 28

Danny was in a small battle when Linc saw him, holding a jar of Nutella and a jar of an ordinary peanut butter. Linc approached him and took the jar of ordinary peanut butter and put it back to the shelf.

"There's nothing better than Nutella." Linc said when Danny looked at him.

Danny nodded and placed the Nutella in his basket, Linc noted that it was filled with picnic things, strawberries, Alice's favorite.

"Going on a picnic with Alice?" Linc asked.

"Yup." Danny said popping the letter P. Linc grinned, "She said she loves sunsets. I was thinking of bringing her to the hills just outside town."

"That's a wonderful idea, Danny." Linc said, when he turned Danny placed a hand on Linc's shoulder, Linc looked back and saw Danny offering him a small smile.

"It wasn't anyone's fault, Linc." he said, Linc frowned at him, "I'm not blaming you because of my amnesia, Alice is not blaming you, no one blames you for everything that has happened. So don't blame yourself."

Linc nodded, "Take care of Alice."

"I will." then the two part ways.

"Are we there yet?" Alice whined, Danny smirked and squeezed Alice's shoulder while guiding her to the hills. Alice pouted a bit when she didn't got a response that she was expecting.

"I saw Linc earlier." Danny started, so that he can distract Alice from the surprise, he can feel her getting fidgety, "He helped me pick something for our date today."

"Really? How is he?" Alice asked, she didn't got a chance to talk to Linc after Jane's service.

Danny shrugged and smiled a bit, "He seemed okay, he actually told me to take care of you."

"Is that so?" Alice teased, "So now you feel obligated to take care of me because of what has happened?"

"I didn't want to imply that." Danny argued, when he heard Alice's laugh he laughed too, "You're such a tease!" he said and tickled her side.

Alice squealed and punched Danny's arm, "You're unfair, I can't see, remember?"

Danny chuckled and removed the blindfold from Alice's eyes. Alice squinted to adjust the sudden brightness, when she got accustomed, she gasped at the sight.

There was a picnic blanket laid out with different sizes of tupperwares, there was a jar of Nutella and a few chips she liked to eat. She turned to Danny who was staring at her.

"This is so sweet." she said and put her arms around his neck, "You're such a romantic."

He grinned and pecked her lips, "I am." he agreed and held her hand, interlacing their fingers together. He led her to the blanket and they sat there.

It was a beautiful way to spend the sunset together, Danny laughed with Alice as she retold him all those moments that always made her smile at the past. He didn't care if he remembered it or not, he was just glad that Alice was smiling.

Danny thought about what Ted told him one day during those times that he knocks at their house. Ted let him in for a while to have a talk because Ted is getting tired of him knocking everyday.

"Tell me what you feel, Danny, tell me what you're heart is telling you." Ted said to him with a serious look on his face.

"I love her. This is not just some infatuation or being grateful because she stuck with me all those times. I really love her. When I got the amnesia, I was scared at first. Having people tell me things of what I used to do and what life I have left before. But with Alice, I just forget that I have it. But like I said, I was scared. Really scared. I kept thinking, what if she left me because she's given up hope. So instead of watching her walk away from me, I walked away first."

There was a ghost smile played on Ted's face, his translucent blue eyes glittered for a moment, then he looked at Danny, "When it's real, you can't walk away." then he stood up and left Danny at the living room.

Danny turned her head and looked at Alice who was busy taking a picture of the sunset, he smiled warmly at her and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. She looked up at him and smiled, "Do you think our love is real?" Danny asked.

Alice looked at the sun, "No." this made the smile on Danny's face fall, "Maybe if you ask me some other time, when it's a really bad time, then I'll say yes."

Danny frowned, "Why is that?"

"Well, this moment is too perfect. Too surreal. It's like a dream." then she turned to him, "And right now, I'm scared of waking up to know it's not."

Danny chuckled and held her face in both of his hands, "This is real, Alice." he stated and inched his face closer, "So real that you don't want to sleep anymore."

Then he pressed his lips on her and let the usual fireworks and butterflies do their thing to the both of them.

It was that moment that they both knew that what they had is real. Maybe it will last, but they won't know until when. It could be until next week, next year or maybe until they die. What they're going to do is to enjoy it while it still last.

Ted was looking at the newspaper when Alice walked in. He looked up for a moment to give her a weird eyebrow meeting. She only chuckled and plopped down beside him, she snuck a glance and saw he was looking at the Classified Ads.

"So, what are you doing?" Alice asked.

Ted smirked, "Looking for a job." he said and turned to her, "I think my work here is done."

"What is it exactly your job here?" Alice asked.

"Well, that would be see my father again." he smiled when she saw her scowl, "Also my younger sister and the wife of my father."

"Why don't you stay here?" Ellen suggested, "We would love to have another male around the house."

Edgar hugged his wife by the waist, "Are you saying that I'm not man enough to empower the two of you?" Ellen only giggled and slapped Edgar's arm playfully.

Ted chuckled at the two, but there would always be the slice of hurt on his chest, he would never get used seeing Edgar flirt with another woman. To him, he would always picture his mom as the perfect girl for Edgar.

"Hey." Alice placed a hand on Ted's shoulder, "If you don't mind me asking, where's your mom?"

Ted looked down, "She's slaving herself to my vicious step-father." he replied, "He always hated me."

"Did they had a child together?"

Ted shook his head, "Whem my mom gave birth to me, she was in critical condition. She always stressed since she was in college and didn't took care of herself. So after welcoming me to the outside world, she was transferred to the ICU and only got out when she was much better."

Alice smiled softly, "She must've really loved you if she wasn't mad at you." she said and looked at her father, "Dad would've loved her if he didn't met my mom."

Ted couldn't help but feel a small guilt build on his chest, "Don't say that. If they didn't meet, then you wouldn't be here and Dad wouldn't be as happy as he is now."

Now that Ted said it aloud, he realized that it was true. It didn't matter if his mom got together with Edgar, because that would mean there would be no chance for him to really know his father.

Alice saw the shine on Ted's eyes, finally he understands, she thought. She stood up, "Well, I'm going to bed now. Teddy, you should reconsider mom's suggestion."

Ted nodded and put down the newspaper, "I think I will."
