Chapter 22

Ellen heard the front door open and close, she popped her head from the kitchen and saw Alice walk in.

"Hi, sweetie, do you want some cookies?" she asked.

Alice shook her head and went to the living room where Teddy was watching some football game. In his hands was a glass of bourboun, Alice took it.

"Hey!" he started, but Alice drowned it in one gulp. He raised his eyebrow and watch her put the glass down and take a deep breath, "Well, you could've told me if you want a drink, I would've given you one."

Alice dropped down beside him, "I hate my life." she drawled.

"Trouble at paradise?" he asked, Alice looked at him weirdly, "What I mean is, is there a problem with Danny? He was here not fifteen minutes ago."

"Well, he saw me at the beach." Alice said, "I just got from the hospital and decided to have some alone time. I was crying when he arrived."

"And you broke up with him." Teddy finished.

"Well, not exactly, we weren't together in the first place." Alice said.

"But you were together before he got the accident, so technically you are still together until a while ago." Teddy pointed out.

Alice just shrugged, "I never thought you were smart."

Teddy shrugged too, "It runs in the family genes." he said and smirked, "Well, I'll spare you with the brotherly advice that would only confuse your brain more, why don't you just look for some soppy chick flick and give it a good cry, I'll even pay for the ice cream. In less than three hours, you're good to go."

"Nah, I'd rather look at the letters from the universities and try to narrow down my options."

"Well, my personal opinion is Harvard." Teddy said, "I've seen their fraternity parties and it was a blast."

"Stop influencing your sister to useless parties." Edgar said as he got in the living room.

"It's not useless, Dad. It's more of an experience party." Teddy said, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively at Alice.

Alice rolled her eyes and turned to her dad, "Are you sure he's my brother?"

Teddy feigned hurt by placing his hand on his chest and looking shocked dramatically, "I feel offended."

"Well, that was meant to offend you." Alice said and walked upstairs. The sound of her brother's laughter faded on the background.

She felt the effects of the strong drink to kick in to her. Numbing her officially from all the pain she was feeling right now.

This is what I want. To be free from all the pain and grief that I don't want to feel.

"Sweetie, Danny's here to see you." her mother said while knocking softly.

"Tell him to go away." Alice said, with a dull voice and emotionless tone, "I don't want to see him." she tried her best to not let her voice crack at that.

She heard the shuffling of footsteps and then a sound of someone making protest. Alice got out from her room and saw her brother standing infront of the front door, blocking all the view.

She maneuvered her way to the side where she was not in plain sight, Teddy saw her stand there, listening to what Danny had to say. His eyes were as cold as ice.

"Like I told you, Danny, she doesn't want to talk to you." Teddy said.

"She didn't mean that." Danny's voice was near to pleading, "Please, I know I upset her, I just feel like I need to explain myself to her and make her understand."

Teddy pinched the bridge of his nose, "Alice is a smart girl, Danny. I think she perfectly understood what you said to her and she's trying to cope on her own way."

"But--"

"If you're not going to move out of our porch, I will be forced to use my hands." Teddy cut him off.

"Just ten minutes, Teddy." he said, holding out his two palms, indicating the number ten.

Teddy looked at Alice who just sighed in exasperation.

"Make that five." Teddy said and moved aside, Danny raced inside and saw Alice at the side.

"Alice." he said, he made a move to go closer but Teddy stopped him.

"And not three feet closer."

Danny rolled his eyes and looked at Alice, sending her some kind of mental link to just listen to him.

"Five minutes, Danny." Alice said and looked at him with that dull emerald eyes. Suddenly it wasn't the same green orbs that shimmered with happiness or any emotion at all.

"I would prefer that we talk alone." Danny said, his voice turning much serious, he needed to tell this to Alice before eveything was over.

Teddy grunted but walked to the kitchen, Alice walked out of the porch seeing that they were still in hearing distance if they stayed at the living room.

Alice sat down at the small stairs, looking at the isolated road before her. She tried to feel the loneliness engulf her in one massive hug, but it never came to her. Nothing but numbness in her now.

Danny sat down next to her, he reached out to hold her hand but she avoided his attempt and cleared her throat, "You're wasting your five minutes."

"Alice, you love me," he started, the lump in my throat was getting thicker by the second, "you still do, even when you act all cold."

"You don't know how I feel about you right now."

"I do know. Despite this stupid amnesia, inside me, like deep inside me, I know that you love me. I also love you too, I really do."

"Stop telling me lies, Danny. You don't remember anything." she started to stand up but Danny held on her wrist, when she tried to jerk away he held on tightly.

The sparks where there, she wanted to let it calm her but she only felt furious the more she felt those electricity run through her.

"I want you in me life--need you." he corrected.

"I'm not some necessity, Danny." Alice said and sighed, she gave up.

No matter how strong she was, this is one battle she can't fight no longer. All she wanted to do was to raise the white flag and finally rest.

"You know I love you, I really do. But I can't fight anymore for you, and I don't know maybe we'll be together again, sometime." Alice said, tears prickling on the corner of her eyes, Danny raised his hand and brushed it away, leaving her eyelashes wet.

"Can't you hold on a little more?" he asked, his voice cracking now. Distress was evident in his voice, she looked up to him and saw that tears started to form on his eyes.

"I can't." she said and retracted her hand from his grasp, "I can't hold on any longer." she barely whispered.

She got inside the house and ran up to her room, crying for the first time until her throat ached and her eyes were all puffy.

Danny didn't followed her, Teddy would've snapped his neck. He just stood there, willing himself to remember anything at all that can make Alice hold much longer for him.

Because once this was for sure, Danny couldn't imagine life without Alice. Amnesia or not.
