CHAPTER 48: TWO NEW RECRUITS: PART TWO: DARKNESS
My POV
I felt like I was swimming in darkness. Floating in nothingness. I found it comforting.... Soothing. I wanted to stay in here forever. It was nice and cold. A relief compared to the feeling of being burned from the inside, as if someone had made me swallow gasoline and threw a lit match in. Why not let myself die? This feeling, I want to stay here forever, in the coldness, the nothingness. I could feel my life force.
What kept me connected to the world of living. I knew that if I cut the string, that kept me connected, I would stay in here forever. I imagined a dagger hacking away at the strands that were getting stronger and pulling me away. It worked. I was half way done. No more monsters. No more pain. Just nothingness. The cold. Then suddenly, my mental dagger was snatched away by a pale hand.
I finally opened my eyes in the dark place. "Stop, Esperanza." A female's voice, strong and clear, ordered. I focused on the slim women in front of me. Skin as pale as snow. Eyes like pieces of solid shadows or the darkest night with flecks of white. Eyes like the night sky, if there was no pollution. Tight clothes so dark that Hades would be jealous. A whip made of stars held casually in her hand. Nyx. Mom.
"MOM?" I hissed out, annoyed. "Who else? Santa?" Nyx scoffed. I raised an eyebrow in amusement. "I wish, then I would get cookies and eggnog." I teased. Nyx pouted. I chuckled. "I think I'm more mature than you." I teased again." Nyx gasped, looking mildly offended, with a mock mad face on. But her eyes twinkled with amusement. Then I shook off my surprise and amusement and got serious.
"Well, you certainly weren't what I expected. From what I heard of you, you made Hades sound like Apollo, except wearing pink and smiling and spreading happiness." I confessed. My mom's face darkened. "Yes, I may have made.... quite an impression." Nyx said grimly. "But I'm like the moon, which is also in my domain as it is seen mostly at night. There are two sides of a moon: A dark one and a bright one." Nyx began to explain.
"So, otherwise, you have an evil blood-seeking side to you and a bright, happy, funny, sarcastic side to you." I finished for her. "Like me." I muttered. My mom's dark eyes became sad. "Yes, and your dark side had awoken. And, it worked with your bright side. Quite unusual." Nyx said grimly, sadly. I nodded. That was the darkness I felt. Nyx suddenly reached out and grabbed my shoulders in a tight, painful, iron grip.
"You must learn to control it. I don't want you to face my pain. The pain of being overlooked. Of being misunderstood. Of killing those who thought of you as a friend." My mom whispered, pain in her eyes. My eyes widened in horror. Then I narrowed my eyes, in determination. "I'll try my best. I'll try to bring light into your name. And everyone will wish that you were their mom!" I promised, feeling the determination burn through me, bright and pushing away my doubts.
Nyx let go with a sigh of relief. She gave me a sad smile. "You need to let yourself rest. Let yourself recover from the vast amount of energy you used. Your friend is worried sick, practically strangling the spawn of Apollo demanding that they fix you right now." Nyx said wisely with a hint of amusement. I grinned. Sounded like the Faith I knew when she was mad and when I got hurt.
I saluted my mom. "Mission steal your couch is underway." I said dramatically, before jumping on the black couch I had spotted. Nyx chuckled before waving her hand. Mt vision darkened, and I knew that my mind was finally shutting down. And I let it, rebuilding the bond between my soul and my body.
