Chapter Five
"Megan, don't be a lazy ass, come down here!" I groaned and dropped my pen on my desk.
What's going on now? It's only 8.
I stood up and grabbed my sweater .
"Megan!"
"I'm going!" I shouted back. I ran out my room as I slip my sweater on. I ran to the living room where my mum and Emily were. But there's someone else here.
There's a guy.
"Um, what's going on?" I ask her as I stood beside Em.
The guy looks just as old as my mother. He's pretty tall with blonde hair and green eyes. He looks really built like he's been working out his whole life.
"Whos that?" I ask her. Mum widen her eyes at me in a scolding way. I shrugged and sat on the arm of the couch.
"This is Rick... We've been working together in the Mason's household for 3 years. And, well," she chuckled. I raise an eyebrow at her. She's getting there, I can sense it. "We're going out."
Not surprising. I looked at Emily whos jaw dropped. I tipped her chin up to close her mouth. She looked at me questioningly. I shrugged and turned back to our mum. Well she's beat me to the boyfriend stage.
"You're replacing dad?!" Emily shouted. I looked at her surprisedly at her outburst. Rick looked uneasy.
"Emily!" She scolded her. She grabbed her arm and I immediately stood up to defend Em.
"Mum you don't have to shout-"
"Your father died 5years ago, Emily. When can you move on!" She said.
"No! You are replacing him! Just because he's dead doesn't mean you can just forget about him!" With that, Emily ran to her room. I sighed and crossed my arms.
"Unbelievable... Just... Unbelievable." She said in disbelief. She was about to march to Em's direction but I stopped her.
"I'm going to talk to her." I said in a whisper.
"No, Megan. She needs to be disciplined," she said in a scolding way.
"Hm, right. Mum you have to understand that Em wont be okay with this right away. Shes 10, y'know. Give her a few days to let this sink in..." I said in a annoyed tone.
She scoffed. "Rick's going to be good father to you both, the least you can do is respect him."
I shrugged and cocked my head. "Alright." I said and turned around. She grabbed my shoulders and spun me around.
"What's the tone, huh?" She asked seriously. I looked at her in disbelief. "You know I'm only doing whats best for you..."
"I just think that, yeah okay he can be your boyfriend but that doesn't mean he'll be our father." I said. I turned around and walked away. I stood infront of Em's bedroom and knocked on her door.
"I don't want to talk to you!" She shouted.
"Em, it's me... Come on, open up." I said. I turn to see mum staring at me worriedly. I gave her a blank expression and turned back to Em's door.
The door opened, revealing Em's head poking out. "Meg, can we not talk about it?" She asked. I smiled and nodded.
"Of course. Go get dressed. I'm taking you to practice." I said. She nodded and shut the door behind her. I went to my room and disappeared there.

"If she doesn't want to talk, then let her. Don't force it out of her!" I told her.
"Well you make her talk, Meg!"
I narrowed my eyes at her. "Emily's my sister. I can't make her do what she doesn't want to do! You should know that, you're our mother." I said.
Em was already standing by the couch when I turned around. Mum made a move to her but Em just stared her down.
"Is she always like that?"
A man's voice filled my ears. I looked at him from the corner of my eye. He's much taller than I am. Probably 8 inches taller.
"Why don't you ask mum." I said and walked away. I walked pass mum and Em followed behind me.
I opened the door, Em went out first. I turned around to see the hurt on mum's face and shut the door behind me.
"Hey," I heard Rick's voice from behind the door. I stopped in my tracks.
"Hey, hey." I called Em over. She stood beside me and we both stuck our ear to the door,
"I'm not even sure if I'm doing the right thing, Rick." Mum said in a worried tone.
"She's not..." Emily mouthed. I roll my eyes and listen to their conversation again.
"I'm sorry for how my kids reacted, it's just new for them. I mean Emily didnt have a father half of her life, she barely remembers him. And Meg," I hear her sigh. "It was never easy for her, y'know?"
Was?
"I can't blame them. Karen and Holly are new to me going out too. We're on the same page, Lia." Rick said.
Emily and I exchange glances. I shook my head and motioned her that we need to get going.
"Okay, who are Karen and Holly?" Emily asked, clinging to my arm.
"Probably his kids..." I said dryly as we sat in the bus stop.
The two of us fell silent. A cold breeze hit us, making me shiver. I stuffed my hands in my jacket pocket. It may be summer but the UK weather is bipolar, as always.
One day its bright and sunny the next its cold as Autumn.
"Meg..."
"Hm?" I look down at her.
"What was Dad like? How do you remember him?" She asks. Just the thought of dad made my chest burn. I look down and shook my head.
"Didnt mum tell you about that?" I ask her. My voice cracked. I closed my eyes shut and block away the pain.
"Mum's barely home, Meg. And when she is, she's either really tired or asleep or busy... We don't really... Talk." She said, shrugging. "I might've talked to you more than her the past few years... And you're only around for the summer"
"Yeah, sorry about that... Why don't you ask me next time, yeah?" I said. She smiled up and nodded. I look straight ahead. Every time I breathe there's smoke coming out of my mouth.
A bus pulled over infront of us. Emily ran inside to the back. I scanned my Oyster card on the reader and sat beside Em.
A few minutes later, we pulled infront of the stadium. Em pressed the red 'Stop' button on the handle. The bus stopped on the next stop. Em ran outside and hurriedly in the stadium. I follow behind her, slower than she is.
When I reached the football field, the atmosphere turned dark. How can Em be so happy when she steps on that field? Or any field for that matter. A figure suddenly appeared beside Em. He's wearing a black jacket. He's towering over my sister but then again everyone does. Emily looked up at me smiling. She motioned me towards her, my eyes suddenly widen and I feel my entire body drain of colour.
Em ran towards me and grabbed my hand. "Louis has something to tell you! Its important!" She said, pulling me with her. I swallowed hard and pulled her back.
"Come on Meg!"
She caught me off guard when she suddenly pulled me harshly. I gasped and struggled out of her grasp. She let go, surprised by my behaviour. My chest was beating so hard. There's a lump in my throat that hurts. Just as I was about to run away, she grabbed my wrist and yanked me down, making me fall on the ground.
My whole world started spinning. All of the sudden I couldn't breathe.
Words and voices ring in my head.
"Meg, the plane crashed"
"Meg! What are you doing?!"
"Get up! Finish the game, girl!"
"Meg hes gone."
"Megan! GET UP!"
All of them mashed up in one horrifying moment. I felt like a scream was attempting to escape my mouth but nothing.
Then I felt myself being lifted off the ground. I started to breathe more evenly. My vision was coming back but I shut it quickly. Afraid of what I might see.
I was sat on the bleachers with someone beside me. Their arms wrap around me protectively. I took a deep breath and opened my eyes.
"Meg, you're cold..."
I looked and saw Louis. He looks really worried. He already let me go but his other other arm brushed mine comfortingly.
"You going to be okay? Here..." I look down and saw him holding me a glass of water.
"You had a panic attack... Maybe you should go home. I'll take Em home for you."
"You don't have to" I said in a murmur. "I'm fine, I promise."
"You sure? You scared me right there." He said taking a deep breath. "Honestly I thought you were going to pass out." He said
"Sorry for making you worry." I murmur, playing with the cup. I removed his arm around me awkwardly. I scratched the back Of my neck nervously and sat up straighter.
"Em said you wanted to tell me something?" I ask him just to steer away from the subject.
"Oh yeah." He said in a more cheery way. "There's a game tomorrow here in the stadium. And most likely I'm taking the kids to watch. Its nothing really, I just want your permission. But you're welcome to come." He said. I looked at him more concentratedly.
"It's not a date!" He said becoming panicky all of the sudden. I looked at him awkwardly and nodded.
"Thanks but Em can survive without me at least for a couple hours." I said, shrugging.
"No I can't!" I turned around and saw Emily running towards me. She wrapped her arms around my neck making me lean forward. "Meg you can't leave me! What if I get thirsty and no one will buy me a drink?"
"Ah, so I'm just your little money keeper?" I ask her,
"N-n-no!" She panicked and stood infront of me. "What I mean was im going to feel lonely without my super awesome and amazing and beautiful big sister I will have no one to talk to plus you're going back to London in two months and I'm going to be lonely again don't you want to spend time with me?!" She said really fast.
I chuckled and looked down. "You forgot a little thing there, love." I said.
"Um, I love you?" She smiled at me crookedly.
Louis and I laughed. Em's shoulder dropped and her lips pouted.
"You..." I said grabbing her arm and pulling her to my lap. "Only say that when you want something!"
"Right and I usually get it... Because you love me too." She said, grinning and blinking at me.
"You're unbelievable!" I push her away but I can't contain my smirk.
"And you're beautiful!"
I heard Louis chuckle. I looked at him, raising an eyebrow. "Your sisters do this?" I ask him.
He smirked and shrugged. "They're worse." He said in a low cool husky voice.
"It's not like you're doing anything else." She said getting off me. "Or would you rather stay at home watching mum and Rick making googoo eyes at each other?" She blinked her eyes at me with her lips pouted.
"Disgusting." I said with pure annoyance.
I realised Louis and me were looking at me curiously. "I'll think about it?" I said unsure.
Louis smirked and stood up. He pointed at me as he went to the field. "Make it quick, alright?" He said before winking at me.
There it is again. There's something about him thats making all the hair on my body stand up.
And I can't believe he snapped me out of my panic attack just before it got really bad. On the other hand he was very comforting. I smile at the thought. He's a good guy as far as I know. I know him for three days, not that long but he seems sweet.
But I live by the quote 'those who smile the brightest are the ones who cry the most'
He's bound to be hiding something. Everyone hides something.
But one thing I know is that thing we have in common.
Our love for football.
Only he shows it while mine is contained.
