Harry was thrown backwards when the bus lurched forward, but Brittany grabbed onto a bed and stood her ground.
"That was unexpected."
She said as the bus lurched forward even faster. Harry looked her like, "no kidding". The conductor started a conversation with them.
"This is where we was before, somewhere in Wales or something."
He pointed out the window. The countryside was dark, but Brittany could have sworn trees were jumping out of the way.
"But, don't muggles see he bus?"
Harry asked, astounded.
"Muggles? Nah, they don't see, or hear, a thing. Never noticed anyfink."
Stan responded. Harry looked exasperatedly out the window when Stan left to get another passenger.
"So, what now?"
Brittany asked.
"I reckon we just... Run?"
Brittany nodded.
"Brilliant plan, Merlin. Seriously. We just... Run."
Harry gave her a look.
"I'm making this up as I go, really, and you didn't have to come along."
Brittany laughed.
"You've told me that for the last few years, Harry. I'm sticking with you."
Harry laughed incredulously and looked back out the window. Stan came back with an elderly woman who looked naseous, and let her out of the bus, throwing her bags behind her. Harry looked back at Stan, who was reading a newspaper, and suddenly said,
"That man! He was on the muggle news!"
Brittany looked at the man on the newspaper and nodded.
"He was, wasn't he." "
"Of course he was on the muggle, news. Neville, where you been? Do you really not know who Sirius Black is?"
Stan asked. Harry shook his head and looked at Brittany. She shrugged.
"Neither of you do? Bloody 'ell, 'ow can you not?"
Brittany shrugged.
"We don't read the news much."
Harry nodded in agreement.
"Well, you see... 'e's a murderer. Killed t'irteen people with a single curse. Got himself locked up in Azkaban for it. Apparently 'e woz a big supporter of... You-Know-Who."
"Who, Voldemort?"
The bus lurched to the side as Stan and the driver cringed at Harry's comment.
"Don' say 'is name!"
Stan snapped. Harry muttered sorry.
"Anyway, 'e's escaped Azkaban now. First one that done it. No one knows 'ow."
Brittany turned to Harry.
"This"
She paused for dramatic effect,
"Is not good."
Harry looked out the window.
"He can't be worse than Voldemort, can he?"
Harry whispered.
"I don't know.."
Harry looked back over at Stan.
"He's the first to escape Azkaban? Haven't there been other breakouts before?"
Stan shook his head.
"No, the guards scare 'alf the prisoners to death, and most go out of their minds within a few weeks. It's the guards that keep people in there."
The driver looked back over his shoulder and said,
"Talk about something else, Stan, there's a god lad. Don't like those Azkaban guards very much, me self."
Stand continued on the subject anyway.
" I reckon they must'n've effected Black if 'e woz already mad. You know what 'e did after 'e murderered those t'irteen people? 'E laughed. Stood there and laughed. Went with those ministry official 'oo carted 'im away quiet as you please, laughing 'is 'ead off."
Brittany bit her lip. For some reason, the laughing scared her more than the whole murder, supporter of Voldemort thing. She glanced over at Harry. He looked worried.
"Harry? You okay?"
Brittany whispered.
"I broke the law, I'm going to Azkaban, and I'm going to end up like Sirius Black."
Harry whispered.
"In a few weeks, they'll be talking about me. Oh yeah, Harry Potter, we 'ad him here just a weeks ago! Blew up 'is aunt, 'e did! Tried to run for it!"
Harry whispered frantically. Brittany actually laughed.
"This isn't funny!"
Harry hissed.
"You're over reacting!"
Brittany snorted. Harry glared at her.
"Where'd you two say you where 'eaded, Neville and Emily?"
Stan asked them, breaking their whispered conversation.
"Diagon Alley."
Brittany responded, and with a loud bang, the bus stopped. They were there.
"Well, thanks."
Harry mumbled as he got off the bus,
Stan dragging his trunk behind him.
"Ah, there you are Harry, Brittany!"
Harry's head shot up. A man in a pinstriped cloak and a green bowler hat was greeting them at the door.
"'Oo'd you say Neville and Emily were Minister?"
Stand asked.
"Neville? Emily? Oh no, this is Harry and Brittany Potter!"
Fudge asked. Harry looked miserable.
"I knew it! I knew it! Look'ee there, Harry Potter!"
Stan was exclaiming as the minister escorted Harry and Brittany into the Leaky Cauldron.
"Have a seat, would you like a crumpet?"
Fudge asked as he leaded them into a room on the second floor.
"I'm Cornelius Fudge, the Minister for Magic."
Fudge introduced himself, but Harry already knew who he was, and had explained what he looked like to Brittany, last year, but that had been in secret under an invisibility cloak, so Fudge hadn't known Harry was there.
"You have a scare there, Mr. Potter, running away like that."
Fudge addressed Harry.
"And you, following your brother!"
Fudge turned to Brittany.
"No matter, as long as you are safe. Your aunt has been properly punctured and you aunt and uncle are willing to take you back for the summer holidays."
He concluded.
"But-"
Harry stared to say, but Brittany cut him off.
"That's it, then?"
She asked. The minister nodded. Harry spoke again.
"I'm not going to be expelled?"
He asked.
"Of course not! The ministry doesn't expel people for blowing up their aunts! It was a simple mistake, many young wizards don"t know how to control their magic."
"But last year, a house elf used magic in my house and the ministry warned me I'd be expelled if it happened again!"
Fudge looked slightly uncomfortable.
"Don't push it."
Brittany hissed under her breath.
"Well, you don't want to be punished, do you? No? Good!"
Fudge nodded on his way out.
"Now, it would be best if you stayed in Diagon Alley for the time being, and didn't go into the muggle world. And return here before dark. Tom will get you a room."
Fudge said a he exited the room. Brittany followed Tom up the stairs, but Harry dashed back to the minister.
"Any luck catching Sirius Black, sir?"
Fudge looked oddly uncomfortable again.
"We're, er, working on it yes."
Harry nodded.
"Minister, I was wondering if, well,.."
Brittany left before she could hear the end of the sentence. She didn't want to know what that was about. She entered the room that she and Harry would share, (a small room, but all their stuff was in it, and there was a screen separating the room in half) where Hedwig was already waiting.
"Hello there, Hedwig."
Brittany smiled. She turned and saw Harry walk in and shut the door.
"What was that about?"
She asked, walking over to a bed and laying down on it.
"I asked Fudge if he'd sign my permission form to Hogsmeade."
"And did he?"
"No."
Harry sighed. Brittany shrugged.
"Oh well. Hey, what did I tell you? You're not going to Azkaban!"
Harry laughed.
"You were right!"
He rolled his eyes and laid down on the bed without taking his glasses off. Brittany couldn't see him anymore thanks to the screen.
"Night, Harry."
Brittany rolled over at snuffed out the candle on the side table.
"Night."
Harry responded, doing the same. The room was in total darkness.
"Hey, you know what this mean?"
Harry asked
"What?"
"We get the rest of the summer without the Dursleys!"
