Brittany raced into an other room.

"Hi Harry."

Harry was staring at a mirror.

"Brittany come and see this. It's our parents!"

Brittany walked over to the mirror.

"I only see us."

"Here look at it straight on."

Harry moved Brittany closer to the mirror. She gasped when she saw her parents, standing with Harry and herself. They were smiling, and the Brittany in the mirror was holding a bunch of pranking fireworks under her arm and Bertie Bott's every flavor beans. She was smiling, brighter than she had ever smiled. She looked older in the mirror. She watched as the mirror Harry took a jelly beam from the container, and made a face as it was probably a nasty one.

"I see us. With our parents. It looks like the future we should have had."

She stared at it for a little longer. It was beautiful and ugly, happy and sad. The family was so happy, yet it was a family that was ripped away from her when she wasn't even one. Harry had left to go get Ron or something, and Brittany just stood watching the mirror.

Chapter 18

Brittany visited the mirror with Harry for a few more nights. Each night she would notice something different, like how she and Harry saw slightly different images,(Harry never saw their scars), or how she would easily light the fireworks and her father would laugh, but her mother would scold her and eventually laugh. There was nothing stopping them from going. Until;

"So, back again, Harry. Oh, and Brittany."

Harry had taken the cloak off first. Brittany, who was still under Harry's invisibility cloak, froze.

"I-I didn't see you sir."

Harry stammered.

"Strange how nearsighted being invisible can make you. Brittany I know you are still hiding under that cloak."

Brittany pulled it off and tossed it to Harry. She was relived to see that Dumbledore was smiling.

"So, I see that you, like hundreds before you, have discovered the delights of the Mirror of Erised."

Brittany just nodded. But Harry spoke.

"I didn't know it was called that, sir."

"But I expect you've realized by bow what it does?"

"It-well-it shows me my family, and it shows Brittany our family,-"

"And it shows your friend Ron himself as head boy."

"How did you know?"

"I don't need a cloak to become invisible. Now, can you think what the mirror of Erised shows us all?"

Brittany saw Harry shake his head.

"Let me explain. The happiest man on earth would be able to look in the mirror and see only himself. Does that help?"

"It shows us what we want...whatever we want..."

"Yes and no. It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts. You two, who have never known your family, see them standing around you. Apparently Brittany also sees many jellybeans."

He smiled.

"Ronald Weasley, who has always been overshadowed by his brothers, sees himself standing alone, the best of all of them. Men have wasted away before it, entranced by what they have seen, or been driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible. The mirror will be moved to a new home tomorrow, and I ask you not to go looking for it again. Of you ever do run across it, you will now be prepared. It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that. Now why don't you put that admirable cloak back on and get off to bed?"

Harry stood up.

"Sir-Professor Dumbledore? Can I ask you something?"

"Obviously, you've just done so, you may ask me one more thing however."

Dumbledore smiled.

"What do you see when you look in the mirror?"

"I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks."

Brittany tapped Harry on the shoulder as he stared.

"One can never have enough socks. Another Christmas has come and gone

and I didn't get a single pair. People insist on giving me books."

Brittany giggled she went back to the common room.
