"All right, Merlin, where's the whelp?" Arthur asked as he walked into Gaius's room. Gaius looked over at Arthur as he did so from his place in the center of the room.
"Merlin's making sure the boy recovers, sire," he said. "He hasn't woken yet, so we're monitoring him closely."
"Well, we're supposed to burn him tomorrow morning," Arthur replied. "Can you heal him by then?"
"We'll see," Gaius said. "Your men beat him well. He's lost a lot of blood. You might just have to burn him while he's unconscious. We don't even know if he's a sorcerer, though, so that might not be necessary."
"He is a sorcerer!" Arthur yelled. "He almost killed three of my men!"
"And you're sure it was him?" Gaius asked.
"Yes, I'm sure!" Arthur said. "He raised his hand and a branch dropped on them!"
"It does sound like sorcery," Gaius said. "But you can't be sure."
"You're just as bad as Merlin," Arthur snapped, storming past him and towards the room, throwing open the door. "Merlin, give me the boy!" Merlin looked over from sitting on a chair next to Chase's bed.
"Um, why?" Merlin asked.
"Because he's going to be burned tomorrow," Arthur said. "You promised you wouldn't argue with me, remember?"
"But he hasn't eaten," Merlin said. "You said I could heal him until he was able to eat." Arthur groaned in frustration and turned to stalk out of the room. "Ooh, wait," Merlin said. Arthur stopped and turned around to look at him. "Could Chase win his freedom?"
"Win it?" Arthur scoffed. "That's absurd."
"No, I'm serious," Merlin said.
"No way," Arthur said, shaking his head. "He's burning tomorrow, and there's no way to stop it." He turned and left the room. As soon as Arthur left, Merlin looked down at Chase, who opened his eyes.
"I heard all of it," he said. "Thanks for trying."
"You actually think I'm gonna let you burn?" Merlin laughed. "No, we're smuggling you out as soon as you eat."
