Gaius looked over at the door when it opened, standing up when he saw Merlin carrying Chase and looking concerned.
"What are you doing here?" he asked. "Arthur will burn you alive!"
"You can't let him find us," Merlin said, walking back towards his room as Bree and Adam walked in. "We got in here unnoticed, and we'd like to stay that way."
"Hi there," Adam said, smiling at Gaius as he walked by.
"Is that Arthur?" Bree asked, pointing to Gaius as she followed.
"No, that's Gaius," Merlin explained. "He's the court physician. Sort of like my dad. He's fine." Gaius watched the procession head into Merlin's room in surprise.
"Can he help Chase?" Adam asked.
"Yes, he can," Merlin said, setting Chase on the bed and looking back out at Gaius. Gaius nodded and walked into the room, heading over to Chase as Bree and Adam stood off to the side.
"His neck's the worst part," Merlin said, turning Chase on his side so Gaius could see. "Look. Everything else is healing nicely besides that."
"That's odd," Gaius said, looking at the wound. "I wonder why."
"Well, that's about where our chips are," Bree chimed in. Everyone gave her a confused look. "Our bionic chips," she continued. "They're mostly what gives us our powers. That's really all you need to know."
"Well, has he used them to an extent any time recently?" Gaius asked.
"Not a couple hours ago," Merlin replied. "Do you think that caused it?" Adam asked.
"It's the most likely option," Gaius said. "We'll have to tell him not to use his abilities until he recovers. Merlin, get me fresh water and bandages, and the healing paste you made earlier." Merlin nodded and ran out of the room.
"Is he gonna be okay?" Bree asked worriedly.
"He should be fine," Gaius replied, giving her a quick smile. Merlin ran back in with the needed supplies and set them on the bed for Gaius to use. Gaius quickly cleaned and dressed the wound on Chase's neck, then ushered everyone out of the room to let him sleep, except Adam in case he needed a guard.
"So, what sort of abilities do you have, Bree?" Gaius asked, looking over at her from her position lounging in a chair and playing with some herbs dangling from a string.
"Super speed, invisibility, and voice manipulation," she replied, looking over at him. "Everything a girl needs."
"Well, you certainly don't act like a girl," Merlin commented casually, looking over at her with almost instant realization of the insulting nature of his comment. Bree gave him a look back.
"I've literally lived with four boys my entire life," she replied, holding her hands up. "What would you expect? But seriously, how did you not figure that out sooner? I'm wearing guy clothes and slouching, for god's sake."
"Well, whatever you prefer to be, your powers can definitely come in handy," Gaius chimed in. "Especially your invisibility. If anyone else comes in the room, become invisible immediately."
"Sounds good," Bree said, nodding and going back to playing with the herbs.
"Where are you three from?" Gaius asked.
"California," Bree replied. "Doubt you've heard of it."
"I haven't," Gaius said. "Where is it?"
"West," she replied. "Really far west. Across the ocean and another continent."
"How on earth did you end up here, then?" Gaius asked.
"Magic," Bree replied, raising her eyebrows and twinkling her fingers.
"If you say so," Merlin said. "But I think it's one of your science things."
"It is, but magic seems easier for you to understand, so magic it is," Bree replied with a smile. Merlin sighed and rolled his eyes, leaning his head in his hand. This was going to be a long period of fear and hiding.
