Merlin worked at tending to a half-conscious Chase's wounds in the abandoned home they had found in the side of a hill, one of an old hunter who had died long ago. Chase got the only bed for obvious reasons, while everyone else claimed a different part of the house.
"So, you all have magic?" Merlin asked, looking over in the kitchen at Bree and Adam.
"No, none of us do," Bree replied, looking up from stirring the pot of soup they were making. "We're bionic. I don't know if Chase explained that to you or not."
"He tried," Merlin said back. "I didn't understand."
"I'm not sure even I understand it," Adam chimed in from lounging in a chair nearby.
"Well, it's sort of hard to explain," Bree said. "Especially in this time period. It's hard to explain to people even in our time period."
"Well, if it's not magic, what is it?" Merlin asked.
"It's technology," Adam said. "If you know what that is."
"Uh, not really," Merlin said. "Not the kind you're thinking about, at least."
"Well, it's like this," Bree said. "There's these thin sort of veins of metal strung throughout our bodies that all meet at our neck, and they're controlled by a...a second brain, sort of, in the form of a paper thin piece of metal where all the metal meets, and they allow us to have these powers specific to our body and mind types."
"That is probably by far the weirdest thing I've heard in my life," Merlin said. "So there's metal throughout your body controlled by more metal and they give you powers?"
"Pretty much," Adam said, nodding.
"That makes absolutely no sense," Merlin chuckled, shaking his head.
"It's just science," Bree said with a shrug. "Something you don't have much of yet."
"Well, I'm gonna call it magic because that's what I understand," Merlin said. "You can call it bionics or whatever it actually is."
"Whatever you say," Adam said, looking over at Bree. "When's dinner?"
"It's almost done," Bree said. "How's Chase doing?"
"Uh, he's all right," Merlin said, "given the circumstances. I'll try and have him woken up for dinner so he can get something in his stomach."
"Sounds good," Adam replied, getting up and walking over to look at him. "Ouch. That's worse than I beat him up."
"Well, yeah," Bree said. "You're his brother. You show a little restraint." She started pouring them bowls of soup using a ladle.
"She's got a point," Merlin said. Adam shrugged and walked back into the kitchen.
"Whatever," he said. "I just don't want him to die before we get home."
"He's not going to die," Merlin said. "He might get close, but I'm not gonna let him."
"Thanks for that, by the way," Bree said. "For everything."
"It's my pleasure," Merlin replied. "Honestly, it's better than dealing with Arthur."
"Why? What's he like?" Adam asked, grabbing his soup and slurping it right out of the bowl, getting a disgusted look from Bree.
"He's not bad," Merlin said. "Just a bit unappreciative at times. And stuck up. Just sort of what you'd expect from a prince."
"Makes sense," Bree said.
"I can't say it doesn't have its rewards, though," Merlin said. "It's all definitely worth it. And there's really never a dull moment." He sighed. "I don't think I'm going to get to help him for much longer, though, considering I directly disobeyed him by helping you guys."
"Why'd you do that?" Adam asked, tilting his head. "You didn't have to." Merlin shrugged.
"I just felt it was the right thing to do," he responded.
"Well, we definitely appreciate it," Bree said, giving him a smile. "I doubt we'd have gotten this far without you."
"And Chase would probably be dead," Adam chimed in. "Not that we'd mind." Merlin chuckled as Bree punched him in the arm.
"Well, I'm glad I could help," he said. "It was definitely worth it."
