Merlin watched as Bree and Chase trained together, a regimen they'd clearly done many times. They both knew their stuff, that was for sure. He was impressed. After a while, though, Bree pinned Chase and they stopped fighting. Chase walked over to Merlin once they were done, wiping sweat out of his eyes.
"Good job," Merlin said.
"Thanks," Chase mumbled, leaning back on a tree. "It was really exhausting."
"Looks like it," Merlin replied, looking over at him. "Are you all right?"
"Yeah," Chase said, nodding. "I'm just not used to it after not training for a while."
"Well, you should take a break," Merlin said. "There's a stream nearby where you could take a drink."
"That sounds good," Chase replied, standing up and following Merlin as he walked to the stream. They both knelt down beside it, cupping water in their hands and drinking from it. Bree walked up beside them after a couple seconds, doing the same.
"Good job, Chase," she said, giving him a pat on the shoulder. "You didn't completely fail this time."
"Thanks," Chase replied halfheartedly, not looking over at her.
"Do you think I'd make a good knight?" she asked.
"If they let you in the army, yes," Chase replied. "But they won't, because you're a girl."
"He's got a point," Merlin added before Bree could say anything. "Unless you're extremely exceptional, Arthur won't let you be a knight."
"Well, I'm still gonna fight if I have to," she said with a shrug. "I can do it."
"We know that, but no one else will believe you besides Gwaine," Merlin said. "Because you kicked his ass." Bree chuckled.
"It was easy," she said, leaning back on her hands and crossing her legs. "It was like fighting Adam. He was clumsy and reckless."
"That's very true," Chase said, nodding and sitting down, dangling his bare feet in the water. "Oh, that feels good."
"Don't get too comfortable," Merlin said. "We should head back soon. Well, at least I do. I guess you don't have to, but I like to keep an eye on you kids."
"We'll be fine, Merlin," Bree said, looking over at him. "You can go back."
"Yeah, it's not like anything could hurt us out here," Chase added with a shrug.
"You'd be surprised," Merlin sighed. "Look, I'd feel better if you came back with me." Bree was about to reply when a fog started rolling in, and everyone looked around in confusion, Merlin in slight fear.
"We should go," Chase said, getting up.
"Yep," Bree agreed, she and Merlin getting up as well and starting to back away.
"You aren't going anywhere," a smooth female voice said, a form coming out of the fog to put a face to the name.
"Morgana," Merlin said in surprise, holding his arms out slightly in front of Chase and Bree in a protective gesture.
"Why, of course," Morgana replied with a smirk. "Who else would it be? And you two must be some of the sorcerer children Arthur let into the kingdom." Her face became dark and angry. "You don't know how jealous I am."
"Bree, run," Merlin said. Bree used her super speed and fled without a moment's hesitation, leaving Merlin and Chase to face off against Morgana.
"Well, that was mildly impressive," Morgana said. "Let's see if you can do the same, child."
"Chase, don't," Merlin said, looking back at him. "I can-"
"I'm not letting you," Chase replied, shaking his head and then stepping in front of Merlin, holding his hand out and forming a staff of blue light out the sides of it. "I can take her."
"We'll see about that," Morgana said, drawing her own sword and walking up to Chase, slicing at him. Chase twisted his staff to the side and parried the blow, and the battle commenced.
