The morning of the tournament, the whole kingdom was abuzz with excitement. Such a thing had been unheard of when Uther was around, but now that Arthur was king, a tournament for sorcerers to prove their worth was an idea of common acceptance.
"So, I can't use my super speed," Bree said, standing still as Gwen put on her armor.
"Nope," Gwen replied. "Or any other of your abilities. It's supposed to be a fair fight."
"Fair, my ass," Bree scoffed. "My speed's my asset against bulky, strong men with swords looking to defeat me."
"Well, as long as you make it look like you aren't using your bionics, you'll be fine," Gwen replied. "You just need to convince Arthur that you're not doing anything out of the ordinary."
"Well, that's not too hard," Bree said. "And I have to use a sword too?"
"Yep," Gwen replied. "And a shield. Your opponent will do the same, as will your brothers and their opponents."
"Okay," Bree sighed, nodding. "Won't be too hard."
"Just keep your helmet on," Gwen said, finishing up and holding her helmet out to her. "I doubt they'll take well to a female sorcerer fighting."
"You people and your sexist ways," Bree replied, shaking her head and pulling her helmet on over her braided hair. "I will. Don't worry."
"Good," Gwen said with a smile. "I know you'll do fine." She handed Bree a sword and shield, then walked her over to the waiting area for the tournament to begin, where Merlin was waiting.
"You look good," he said, nodding to Bree and smiling at her. "Very knightly."
"Thanks," Bree replied, smiling back. "So, when's it gonna start?"
"When Arthur gets here," Merlin said, glancing into the arena. "Which he just did. We have to wait for your opponent to go out first, though." Bree nodded, taking deep breaths and trying not to freak out.
"Okay," she said. "I've got this."
"Yes, you do," Gwen said. "I'm going to go sit. Good luck." She turned and ran off, leaving Merlin with Bree.
"I see Adam out there, and Chase," Merlin said. "Adam's super excited, and Chase looks mostly freaked out." Bree nodded.
"That sounds like them," she said. Cheers erupted from the arena and Merlin looked outside.
"Okay, you've got Gwaine," he said. "He's reckless, but a good fighter." He turned to her and gave her a pat on the back. "Go ahead, and good luck." Bree nodded and headed out into the arena, getting met with slightly less cheers than Gwaine. The two sized each other up, circling as they waited for Arthur to start. Merlin quickly ran from the waiting spot around to where he normally stood to watch the tournaments, on a hill nearby the tents. Gaius was waiting there.
"Do you think she can do it?" Gaius asked, looking over at Merlin as he ran up.
"Oh yeah," Merlin replied, nodding as he stopped beside him. "I have full confidence in her."
"But she's never used a sword before," Gaius said.
"I gave her a quick lesson," Merlin said, looking over at him. "She'll be fine."
"If you're sure," Gaius replied, both of them turning to look at the arena as Arthur dropped his arm to signal the start of the match.

The one to make the first move was Gwaine, who waited a couple seconds before aiming a slice at Bree's side. Bree danced away from it, using her sword to help her move the blade out of the way. She threw up her shield when Gwaine pulled back for a strike, the blade glancing off the shield with a clang. Bree used this distraction to aim a strike down near the hilt of Gwaine's sword, making him drop it. She backed up to let him pick it up, earning support from the crowd. Gwaine retrieved his sword and nodded at her, waiting for her to make a move. She strode confidently up towards him, striking high towards his neck. Gwaine parried and then aimed for her leg. Bree jumped over his sword, which threw him off balance, and then kicked him in the chest to knock him over. Gwaine landed on his back, Bree flicking his sword away with hers and then holding it above his chest. The crowd was silent, waiting to see what would happen. Suddenly, Gwaine shoved his shield into her sword, making her stab it into the ground, and then hit her in the jaw with the edge of it. She staggered backwards, the crowd roaring approval. Gwaine cast his shield to the side and picked up his sword, Bree jogging over to hers and drawing it out of the ground. They circled for a couple seconds before Gwaine swung at her, Bree blocking it and then attacking herself. They kept up like this for a while, until Bree gained the upper hand. She twisted Gwaine's sword out of his hand and then held her own to his throat, the crowd still. Bree lowered her blade and nodded to Gwaine, dropping hers on the ground. The battle was over in minutes, but it was a good one. Gwaine offered her his hand to shake and she took it, and then nodded at her as the crowd roared.
"You did well," he said. "You're fast." Bree nodded, letting go of his hand and then looking over at Arthur, who was reluctantly clapping. She switched her gaze to Merlin, who was beaming and clapping enthusiastically, Gaius clapping as well. She looked over at Adam and Chase and almost burst out laughing. Adam was cheering and clapping louder than anyone, and Chase had his hands run into his hair, looking like it had been his life on the line instead. One battle down, two to go.
