Chase was silent for the first part of getting his armor on, and Merlin couldn't decide if he was deep in thought or internally freaking out.
"What's on your mind?" Merlin asked after a while.
"Lots of things," Chase replied quietly.
"Any of which you want to share?"
"...Not really."
"It'll make you feel better," Merlin said, giving him a smile. "Come on. Just one thing." Chase sighed.
"I don't want to be the one that screws things up for everyone," he said. "Bree and Adam both did so well, I just don't think I can do as good as they did."
"If that's what you're most worried about, then you don't need to be worrying," Merlin replied. "You're one of the most noble people I know. Besides, you're a genius, right? You should know how to sword fight better than anyone."
"I'm better with a staff," Chase said. "Besides, I'm still injured. What if I can't handle it?"
"Gaius gave you a full checkup three times, Chase," Merlin said. "You're fit to fight. Seriously, Arthur's been into actual battle with much worse, fresh wounds then you."
"Well, Arthur's Arthur," Chase replied. "I'm just...Chase."
"Well, Just Chase," Merlin said, getting a small smile out of Chase. "You're going to be wonderful. Just stay calm and collected and don't take your eyes off your opponent, and you'll be just fine."
"Thanks, Merlin," Chase said. "You're a good friend."
"Tell that to Arthur," Merlin replied, making Chase smile a little wider. "And come on, do you really think you're going to do worse than Adam? He got cut open in, like, five places."
"I guess you're right," Chase said.
"Just keep a level head and you'll be fine," Merlin said, finishing putting his armor on and giving him a smile. "I know you'll do great." Chase nodded and smiled a little.
"Thanks," he said, putting on his shield and grabbing his sword. "I hope you're right."
"I am totally right," Merlin said, grabbing Chase's helmet and pushing it onto his head. "You've got this, Chase." Chase nodded and then turned and headed out of the room, Merlin following close behind him. It was time for the battle that would decide the fates of Adam, Bree and Chase.Chase faced off against Leon, one of the most skilled and experienced knights. Merlin had a feeling that Arthur did that on purpose to try and get the three siblings banished. He expressed that to Gaius, who agreed.
"Arthur doesn't like those three," he said.
"Yeah, well, they've threatened him multiple times," Merlin said. "Not on purpose most of the time, but still."
"Well, I think we should be frightened for Chase nonetheless," Gaius said. "Leon is extremely skilled with a blade."
"I think Chase can at least handle him," Merlin said. "He might not match him for strength, but I'm sure he does in skill."
"Are you sure?" Gaius asked. "Their lives pretty much depend on this."
"Mostly," Merlin said.
"Well, that's not very convincing," Gaius said.
"He's going to be fine," Merlin said. "I'm sure of that. He can handle himself."
"I sure hope so," Gaius replied. "For his sake and the sake of his siblings." The battle started out pretty mellow, with Chase and Leon occasionally dealing blows but not doing any damage. Then Leon rushed Chase, dealing blow after blow in quick succession. Chase barely kept himself together, losing his shield halfway through and being forced to use only his sword to parry. Once Leon stopped, he threw his shield to the side to make it fair before twirling his sword in his hand and then holding it in a ready stance. Chase grabbed the hilt of his sword with both hands, nervous and tense. He dealt a hasty overhead blow, which Leon easily parried. Chase switched to a side swipe, which Leon also reflected. Chase backed off and thought for a minute, then switched to a one-handed grip, taking his helmet off for better visibility. Leon did the same, making the fight fair. Chase was breathing hard, the thick and heavy armor hindering his movement and making it harder to fight. He could hear ringing in his ears, and his vision went through varying ranges of focus. He wouldn't last much longer out here, so he had to end the battle and fast. He walked up to Leon, took in a long breath, and attacked. Soon he and Leon were locked in an intense sword fight, Leon having the obvious advantage. All of a sudden, as Leon was aiming a jab at Chase, Chase stepped to the side and got his sword's flat side against Leon's, twisting it so Leon's sword fell out of his hand. Chase kicked it to the side and held his sword to Leon's chest for a second to show his victory before lowering it, the crowd erupting in cheers.
"That was a good fight," Leon said, patting Chase on the back. "Good job."
"Thanks," Chase said breathlessly, breathing hard and fast. "You too." Suddenly Chase's world started fading, and he leaned sideways onto Leon, who caught him and held him up. Merlin ran into the arena, helping Leon help Chase out of the arena.
"Is he all right?" Leon asked.
"He probably overheated," Merlin replied. "I think he'll be fine once he gets out of that armor." Those were the last things Chase heard before he blacked out entirely.
