Merlin watched worriedly from the sidelines as Chase and Morgana dueled, amazed and frightened at the fact that Morgana's sword hadn't been sliced in half by the staff he had seen cut through trees on accident. Chase was doing amazingly well despite his still healing injuries and having just fought his sister, and seemed extremely skilled with his staff. He blocked every hit Morgana threw at him, and managed to put in a couple of his own in the process.
"You're doing well," Morgana said after a particular standoff had left both of their hands stinging. "But you have one major flaw." She said a commanding spell, a rock flying forwards at his head. "You play fair." Chase lost his staff and threw up his forcefield, the rock shattering against it.
"I don't always play fair," he said, using both hands to condense his forcefield into a ball of energy, throwing it at Morgana and hitting her before she could cast another spell. Merlin cheered quietly as Morgana struggled to get up.
"You're gifted," she said, standing up. "Why do you use them to Arthur's benefit?"
"He gave us a fair chance at earning our place," Chase replied.
"But who forced you to earn it in the first place?" Morgana said. "Who tortured you and hurt you and almost burned you at the stake?" Chase's response faltered. He glared at her.
"I owe Merlin my life, and Merlin respects Arthur," he eventually said. "That's enough for me." Merlin felt a sudden surge of pride and smiled to himself off in the sidelines.
"Merlin?" Morgana scoffed. "You can't trust Merlin any more than Arthur. He's tried to kill me multiple times, and he's kept more secrets from you than you know."
"That's not true!" Merlin yelled, stepping up next to Chase. "Well, I mean, yes, but that's completely out of context!"
"Honestly, from what I've seen from you, I don't blame him," Chase said, shaking his head. "You're twisted, and I'm not going to let you do the same to me."
"We'll see about that," Morgana said, saying a spell and holding her hand out forcefully afterwards. Chase and Merlin cried out in surprise as they were flung backwards. Merlin struck a tree, but Chase missed one, ending up in some brush nearby. Merlin landed on his stomach, ears ringing and the breath knocked out of him as he pushed himself up. Chase sat up nearby, wincing slightly and holding the back of his neck.
"This is gonna be harder than I thought," Chase said, getting up and walking over to Merlin, helping him up.
"Told you so," Merlin said hoarsely, wincing at the pain in his back. Morgana cast another spell, a blaze of fire searing the ground between Chase and Merlin, both of them jumping backwards from it. The fire then turned and started looping around Chase, forming a ring around him.
"Merlin?" Chase said worriedly, backing into the middle of the ring and looking around in fear. "What's going on?"
"Let him go!" Merlin yelled at Morgana, stalking towards her. He stopped when Chase let out a cry of pain, turning towards him. Chase was cradling his now burnt wrist, tearing up a little.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Morgana said to Merlin as he looked back over at her. "You wouldn't want your little friend to get even more hurt by fire because of you."
"What do you want with him?" Merlin asked with a shrug. "He's of no use to you."
"He's of every use to me," Morgana replied. "He's the leader of his team, and with the use of them, I can easily overtake Camelot."
"We'll never help you!" Chase yelled from inside the ring of fire.
"We'll see about that," Morgana said, looking over at him and raising her hand, the fire becoming a solid dome around Chase.
"Chase!" Merlin yelled, running over to the dome of fire and trying to reach through, the tips of his fingers instantly burning. He pulled them back, watching through the flames as the heat slowly started to overtake Chase.
"Careful, it's hot," Morgana teased, smiling as she watched. "There's no way to get him out, Merlin. Once he falls unconscious, the flames will consume his mind and he will be under my control. The more he resists, the more obedient he will be." Chase fell to the earth with a thud in the fire, knocked out. Morgana cackled as the flames started flowing into Chase's mouth and nostrils. "Be prepared for the end of the world as you know it, Merlin. It's going to come much more differently than you expected."
