Late at night, a horse rose out from Camelot, evading guards and patrols by inches in the darkness. It rode into the woods, as away from Camelot as they could get, stopping only when the sun came up.
"We should hide," Merlin said, stopping the horse nearby a cave and dismounting it, leading it with Chase on top into the cave.
"Merlin," Chase mumbled, looking down at him from leaning forwards on the neck of the horse.
"Yep?" Merlin said, looking up at him.
"I can hear the warning bells from here and hoofbeats," he mumbled. "They're looking for us."
"Okay, well, we'll be careful," Merlin said. "Your crazy good hearing has helped us so far."
"I've told you, it's bionic," Chase said back.
"And I've told you, I have no idea what that is," Merlin replied, tying the horse to a root dangling from the roof of the cave. "Now, come on. We should sleep. We've been up all night."
"Okay," Chase sighed, sitting up and reaching down to Merlin for support. Merlin held onto his sides and helped him off the horse, holding him up after he did so.
"You all right?" Merlin asked. "I know that was hard for you with all your injuries."
"I'm okay," Chase replied, even though his stiff posture and grimace said otherwise. "I just need to sit down."
"Okay," Merlin said, walking him over to the wall of the cave and helping him sit down against it. "Just take it easy, all right? I'll get your bedroll set up before you know it." Chase nodded and let out a strained sigh, relaxing as much as he could and closing his eyes.
"I'm never going to get home," he said.
"Don't say that," Merlin said, taking down their bedrolls from the saddle and starting to unroll Chase's first.
"No, it's true," Chase said, opening his eyes to look over at Merlin again. "It's impossible. You don't understand."
"Then help me to," Merlin replied, looking over at him and setting Chase's bedroll down flat next to him. "Lie down first, though." Chase sighed and crawled himself over to the bedroll, lying down on it and getting himself comfortable before talking again.
"I don't know how to explain it," he said. "But...I'm from...a different world. A different time, at least."
"That's not that hard to understand," Merlin said, getting his bedroll set up. "Are you from the past or the future? You're obviously not from the present."
"The far future," Chase replied. "Ages ahead. I wish I could tell you about it, but it'd upset the balance of time and all that."
"If you say so," Merlin said. "Y'know, whether or not you're a wizard, you're still completely crazy if you ask me."
"I'm not crazy," Chase asked. "Look, if you don't believe me, then just make up a story that's believable."
"Okay, you're a young wizard who got completely bloody lost and attacked and kidnapped by Arthur and his men, and forgot everything about his home and where he's from," Merlin said. "That's your story."
"All right," Chase sighed. "If you say so. Can I at least tell the truth about my family?"
"Well, let's hear it first," Merlin said, lying down next to him and looking over at him.
"I never had a mom," Chase started. "My dad raised me and my older brother and sister in secret because we're all...magic."
"What about him?" Merlin asked.
"He's normal," Chase said. "He kept us underground where no one would find us, because he loved us and was scared of what would become of us if we were found out."
"That sounds vaguely familiar," Merlin mumbled.
"Well, anyways, after a while, my dad married and our stepbrother found us, and our secret was sort of out," Chase continued. "Since then, my dad has let us out into the world, but we've continued to keep our powers secret to protect us."
"That sounds really familiar," Merlin chuckled, bringing a small smile to Chase's face. "That's believable. You can use that much."
"Okay," Chase replied, letting out a sigh and looking up at the roof. "I'm sorry for causing all this trouble."
"It's not your fault," Merlin said, rubbing Chase's shoulder. "Besides, it's nice to have a kindred spirit around. Oh, don't forget, if anyone asks, you aren't magical, and neither am I. It's sort of illegal."
"I won't," Chase replied, looking back over at him. "But I think they'll know. I'm pretty sure everyone's looking for me now. They don't know about you, I'm sure, but they'll know I'm magic and you'll get in trouble for helping."
"Well, that's a risk I'm willing to take," Merlin said, smiling at him. "Now sleep. You need it." Chase nodded and closed his eyes, falling asleep relatively quickly. Merlin sat up once he had to keep watch, knowing that he'd probably fall asleep soon anyways.

Chase woke up when the pounding of hoofbeats above them made the roof start to drop bits of dirt on his head. He sat up and looked around, wincing when his ears started ringing from the sudden pressure change and all of his wounds started stinging. He fought back any noise, lying back down. He reached over to Merlin and covered his mouth, a surefire way to wake him up and keep him quiet. Sure enough, Merlin jolted awake, but stayed quiet. He took Chase's hand away and sat up, setting his hand on the stolen sword hilt he kept nearby. Eventually, the hoofbeats passed and both of them relaxed.
"That was close," Chase breathed, out of breath from stress and injury.
"Sssh," Merlin whispered. "They could still be around. Just stay down and stay quiet." He got up and drew the sword, holding it double-handed as he walked over towards the entrance to the cave. Chase sat up, leaning back on his hands to watch Merlin. Merlin walked out of the entrance to the cave and looked around, holding the sword at eye level. After a couple seconds of looking and making sure, he relaxed.
"There's nothing," Merlin called back to Chase, turning and walking back into the cave. "They're gone." Chase sighed in relief and relaxed slightly.
"That was way too close," he said. "We have to move."
"Not yet," Merlin said, putting the sword away and sitting next to Chase. "It's only sunset. We leave at sundown."
"Well, we can't just sit here like ducks," Chase said, looking over at him. "We have to do something."
"Look, Chase, I know you want to get home," Merlin said. "But we can't. It's not safe."
"It's close enough," Chase said, getting up and grabbing his bedroll, starting to roll it up. "Come on. Let's go."
"Chase, stop it," Merlin snapped, getting up and walking over to Chase. "We've got to wait until sundown."
"No!" Chase yelled, turning around and glaring at Merlin. "If I ended up like this, imagine what might've happened to my siblings! I'm supposed to take care of them, what if something bad happened?"
"You don't know anything for certain," Merlin said. "Besides, I'm sure if they were here, we would've heard. Magic is a big deal around here, and word spreads fast. Now, you need to calm down and be patient." Chase stood there panting for a couple seconds before nodding slowly.
"Okay," he said, staying on his feet for a couple more seconds before collapsing to the floor.
