Chapter 22: Home
[Changkyun's POV]
Evening came and Wonho is still at home. My mother came home before the sun had fully set down. We gathered there at the living room, playing the board game I brought out from my room. It was the board game I used to play with my father when I was young. We played that for hours, sharing stories while we play. My mother would tell stories about me when I was a kid and I would stop her midway because I was so embarrassed with her talking about all the things that I did when I was young. I don't know how many times I got embarrassed with the stories my mother shared but I do know one thing. Wonho laughed a lot today. It's a relief for me, knowing that he now smiles and laughs like these unlike those days before I met him.
After a while, my mom stood up and went to the kitchen to prepare our dinner. She reheated the food she brought home earlier. She called us out to eat after she was done with the preparation of the table. Once we were there at the table, we began to eat.
"So Wonho, how do you go to school?"
My mother started the conversation by asking Wonho.
"Our house isn't that far from the school so I just walk there to class, ma'am."
He answered back to my mother before taking a bite of food on his plate.
"You can call me mom, Wonho."
She smiled at him. I just stayed there quietly, watching every move they made. I noticed that Wonho's eyes started watering.
Is he crying?
"I know how it feels like, Wonho. I once belonged to a broken family. I'm just amazed how you can able to carry it every day."
Wonho just nodded before looking at me. He smiled between the tears which he wiped with the hem of his shirt.
"Wonho, do you want to move here with us?"
My eyes widened at the words that came out from my mother.
"Mom?!"
"What? You don't like Wonho?"
I just fell silent at her words.
"Wonho's a good boy, I can see it in his eyes. I just wanted Wonho to feel what having a family feels like and I want him to keep his promise."
He promised something?
"Changkyun, after all these years, this is the first time in my life that I saw your eyes gleamed every time you talk about someone to me. I know I'm not aware with the sadness you felt all these years, having yourself locked up inside your room. And it hurts me knowing that I can't comfort you that time, until now. I feel like I'm a useless mother to you."
She's right. I never told her any of it before.
"I'm just glad that finally, you had someone that can make you happy and this is the first time you let me know about your friend."
Wonho smiled at me after he heard those words from my mother.
"I'm grateful you came into Changkyun's life, Wonho."
My mother ate the last bite of her food and brought her plate into the sink. I heard the water ran down on the plates, making clattering sounds behind us.
"If you want to move in with us, you can take the room beside Changkyun's. Good night."
She left the kitchen to go to her room but she went back to say something.
