//Enid's POV
I was sitting on the steps of my house when I saw Carl walking towards the wall.
Sighing, I struggled to my feet and jogged up to him, lightly touching his arm.
He turned to face me in surprise.
"You're leaving again?" I asked, disappointed.
He looked off to the side for a moment before sighing and taking a step towards me.
"My dad and Michonne are heading up to Hilltop today to check on Glenn and Maggie. Daryl and everyone won't worry about me if they don't know I'm gone. Can you cover for me?"
"Carl-" I started, hesitant to lie to everyone.
"I'll be back before you know it," he assured, cutting me off.
I simply looked at him for a moment before sighing in defeat.
"Just be careful," I pleaded.
He smiled and pulled me into a hug.
"I will," he told me. "Promise."
I nodded and after a minute we let go and ran to the wall, climbing over it and disappearing.
Slowly, I turned around and started walking in the opposite direction.
I didn't know what it was about Tess that made me not like her. Maybe it was the fact that she wasn't an Alexandrian. Or maybe it was because I didn't know her that well. Or maybe, as crazy as it was to think about, it was because Carl liked her so much.
Finally, I reached my destination.
I stared at the wall, all the names of the people we've lost painted on it. 4 new names had been added:
Deanna
Jessie
Sam
RonI became somber as I saw Ron's name. I remember when Rick told me he died. Shocked was my first reaction. Then, I didn't know whether to feel sad or relieved. I knew I was supposed to be sad because he was my boyfriend and he really cared about me, but instead I felt relief because I didn't have to deal with him anymore. He was always really jealous and he had tried to kill Carl more times than 1.
Regardless, I found myself sitting down in the grass, staring at that one name.
//Rick's POV
As Michonne and I drove to Hilltop, my thoughts kept drifting to my son. I had really wanted to bring him with us but Michonne insisted that we left him.
Enid will make sure he stays, she had said. From what I've head, they've made up. He'll be alright.
Seeing my expression, Michonne reached from the passenger seat and grabbed my hand.
"Carl'll be okay," she assured.
I sighed, keeping my eyes on the road. "I just hope he's not getting himself into trouble. Who's watching Judith?"
"Eugene," she answered.
Last week, I probably wouldn't have trusted Eugene with my daughter. But he really proved how strong he was on the night Negan ambushed us.
Finally, we pulled up to the Hilltop gates.
As we got out of the car, Jesus saw us and opened the gates.
He greeted us at the entrance.
"Hello, Rick," he said. "Michonne. I'm assuming you're here to see Maggie."
I nodded. "Is she okay?" I asked.
Jesus smiled. "Come on," he replied.
As Michonne and I followed him through the community, I asked, "You been alright?"
He shrugged, smirking a little. "Could always be better," he admitted. "But Negan's been leaving us alone, which is really odd."
"I think I know why," I told him. "We got ambushed by Negan a few nights ago. He was gonna kill Glenn. But someone saved us. It was this girl around Carl's age. Her name is Tess."
Jesus looked at me sharply. "Blond hair?" he asked.
"Yeah," I confirmed.
"I've seen her with Negan a few times," he told me. "I think she works with him."
I scrunched my eyebrows together in confusion. "There's no way," I denied, shocked. "I know they know each other, but why would she save us if they work together? And she's a Whisperer."
"I don't know. But you better watch your back," he warned. "She might be gaining your trust so she can kill you when you least expect it."
//Carl's POV
After around 5 minutes of wandering around, I finally found the place Tess and I hung out yesterday.
But she wasn't there.
"Tess?" I called quietly.
No answer.
Confused, I sat down against the log. She told me to meet her right here. So why wasn't she here?
Suddenly, I heard the cock of a gun.
