Chapter 28 - Heartbreak Hotel

Nurse Williams annotates the required nightly entries in her logs as she returns to the room to finish the conversation she and Jamie started previously. Looking up, she pauses as she sees that Phillip is in the process of proposing to Jamie.

Knowing that this was bad timing, she made an attempt to go unnoticed, by slowly easing her way out of the room taking two slow steps backwards.... when suddenly, she sees Jamie holding up her finger as if to say "Wait a minute." She stops in her tracks amid the entrance and watches as Phillip pours his heart out to Jamie.

Phillip stands before Jamie and drops to one knee staring her directly in the eyes as an unenthused Jamie stares back at him. He begins playing music from the Pandora app on his cell phone and sings along in his feeble attempt to set the mood.

"I think about the day I met the perfect stranger, I think about us..." Phillip sings as Jamie cringes before him. Nurse Williams places her hands over her face to contain her laughter as she sees Jamie's eyes look her direction as if to say "Help!" Phillip grabs Jamie's hand and continues singing "And I think about the day I got wrapped around your fingers, I think about us..." Jamie's eyes wander as she immediately begins locating the whereabouts of her purse while evaluating in her head whether or not it's in reaching distance or not. Phillip continues "The sun was shining on you....The lord was smiling on me.."

Jamie, Phillip and the music all pause as the two of them look towards Nurse Williams' direction, while she holds a cup and fresh bag of sunflower seeds in hand. Spitting the shells in her empty cup, she looks at both of them and says "My bad." as she rolls the bag closed and stuffs both of the items back in the pocket of her scrubs.

The music continues as Phillip refocuses on Jamie and says "Baby I knew you were going to be mines since day one and want you to be mines forever. I've been thinking REALLY long and hard about this...." Jamie cringes even more as she glances over at Nurse Williams once again to notice that she wrote a note to Jamie from her notepad in which she held high that read "Run Bitch....RUN!"

Jamie looks back at Phillip and watches his lips move as she slowly pulls her purse closer. The closer the purse got, the more excited she became as her heart raced from the increased level of adrenaline that rushed throughout her body from the anticipated thrill of a fresh new kill. Her hand slid in the purse as she strategically located her weapon and slowly cocked it back in preparation. Suddenly, a voice is heard from across the room "Bae... what's going on over there? This nigga giving you a hard time?"

Phillip, Jamie and Nurse Williams all look in Officer Bob's direction as he struggles to sit up in his bed. With a confused look upon Jamie's face, she goes with it and responds with "Nah boo, it's okay. Just lay back down baby. Momma's gonna give daddy some of this sugar after her friend leaves okay?" Phillip immediately puts the top back over the ring box, grabs his cell phone and stands to his feet. "Damn Jamie, it's like that? I thought we were better than that?" Phillip says as a single tear trickles down the side of his face. He then picks up the flowers that he brought for Jamie and throws them in Officer Bob's direction as he shoves Nurse Williams out of the way, storming out of the room.

His tirade in the hall can be heard from the room as Jamie, Nurse Williams and Officer Bob listen in. "So, how did it go?" says the nurse that Phillip was conversing with earlier as he rudely responds to her with "Go to hell!"

They all burst out in laughter as Jamie looks in Officer Bob's direction and says 'Good looking out, shorty." Officer Bob's laughter abruptly stops...
