Have you ever imagined what life could be like if one little detail changed? Maybe it could make all the difference in the world.
If my parents hadn't been driving that night then maybe they would still be here. Maybe I wouldn't be this girl who quietly let's her thoughts take her over because reality is so painful that if I lived in it all the time it might shatter every fiber of my being.
As he drives down the little roads that run along the beach I stare out the window watching the waves roll up and crash gently but roughly on the shore. He must have noticed me admiring. "It's beautiful even on cold rainy days." I just nod not taking my eyes from it. It was peaceful and it was one of the few reasons I liked living in California.
He pulls into a parking space and puts the car in park. He smiles over at me but I'm to focused on the ocean and it's longing peace that is pulling me to the edge and all I want is to jump. "Riley?" I shake my head turning to him. He seems worried but still welcoming and something is pushing me into its embrace but I try hard to fight it.
"Sorry I'm ready." He sighs nodding and I can tell he just wants to make sure I'm okay but I just can't quite convince myself to tell him. We step out of the car and the breeze hits me causing me to shake. I follow him quickly into a little restaurant.
As we step in I see the place is all to fancy for me but also very empty so my feelings are mixed. "Table for two." He says and I smile because something about the way he said it was funny. The man leads us to our table and I slide into one side of the booth watching Evan do the same before taking our menus from the man.
The man smiles stepping away and Evan reaches over the table placing my menu in front of me. I pick it up leaning over the table to whisper to him. "Hey I said some place cheap. This is probably one of the most expensive places on this side of town." He smiles at me leaning closer and my breath stops because he's closer than I want him to be.
"And I told you not to worry about it." He pause for a second looking over my face. "You start spilling Riley and I will too." He sits back and I do too looking at my menu. I can't even understand what's happening my hearts beating so fast. I glance up at him and his smiles gone because he's to busy scanning through the menu.
Eventually we snag a waitress and order. She assures us that our food will be right out and I sigh turning back to him as she leaves. "Evan..." He smiles softly and I can see it in his face that he's telling me he won't judge me. "Riley I'm not trying to push but I'm worried about you. You don't seem okay and I want you to talk to me."
I look down at the table thinking softly to myself before lifting my head to look at him. I sigh loudly closing my eyes trying to find a reason to just tell him. I think deep down I have one. He's the only person who has ever cared about me. I mean it's kind of hard to say he doesn't. I can see it in his eyes he only wants to help me.
"Do you think we'll have time to walk the shoreline after this?" He reaches his hand across the table touching mine. I smile up at him knowing its only a reassuring touch. "We'll make time." I look down with a smile on my face wondering just how I ended up with this amazing friend.
Sometimes things happen in mysterious ways. Maybe you don't know or understand the reason but it all works out in the end. I knew that Evan would be one of those people. Even now I still don't understand his purpose but he's here and in my life. I don't want that to change anytime soon.
So I posted a day early because I just had the free time. Follow me here on wattpad to be updated when I post. Enjoy. 💙
PS: Should I make the chapters longer from now on?
