It's Sunday morning when I wake up in my very comfortable Queen sized bed. I sigh softly at the sun peeking in through my windows. My phone vibrates softly and I reach for it being curious of the time as well. It's 10:13 and the text was from Evan.
'Hey, I didn't know of you were up but I just wanted to say good morning.' I smile to myself locking my phone. I would text him back eventually but right now there was something amazing that I could smell in the air. I step out into the hallway and decide to go down.
My sister stood cooking breakfast as I stopped softly in the doorway. "Hey sleepy cheeks. Hungry?" I touch my stomach nodding. She smiles pointing towards a plate she already made for me. I take it sitting at the bar with it before deciding to text Evan back. 'Good morning to you too, Evan.'
I lock my phone hearing Ashe set down a cup of Sunny D because she knows I hate orange juice. "Talking to your boyfriend." I roll my eyes pushing her lightly and she just giggles. She returns to the stove where something sounds like it might catch the house on fire.
"He's not my boyfriend, Ashe." She shrugs ruffling my hair as she steps past me to set across from me at the bar. "I was only kidding, Ri." I smile taking a bite of my food. There was a lot of stuff on my plate. Bacon, both kinds of eggs, pancakes, sausage, chicken and biscuits, and I'm sure there was gravy somewhere knowing her.
My phone dings and I pick it up. 'So Ri, anything fun happening in your life this morning?' I almost bust into laughter at the way I could hear him saying that. Thank God my sister is too busy eating to notice. 'Well my sister made everything in the book for breakfast and I do mean everything.'
I take a sip of my juice watching my sister. "So how was yesterday?" I ask softly taking a bite of food. She sighs setting the fork down. "Easier than I thought. If I pass, things will be better for us." I smile touching her hand from across the table. "You got this, I believe in you." She smiles and goes right back to eating.
She was taking her finals in med school this week. If she passed she would be classified as a doctor and honestly I knew she had it in her. My phone vibrates. She giggles softly but returns to eating. I pick up my phone reading his message. 'I can't believe with all the commotion I forgot to step in and say hey to her. She seems pretty cool.'
I sigh softly before typing a reply. 'It's okay there's plenty of more times. Just when you see her don't gawk over her. She's really pretty and it's annoying that everyone does.' I lock my phone finishing up my breakfast even though he replied fast. Once I'm finished I thank my sister who is still eating before taking my phone and heading back up to my room.
When I get to my room I head to the bathroom running the water in the tub. I grab a towel and a pair of underwear and a bra. While the bath is filling up I unlock my phone to read his message. 'I would imagine so if she looks anything like you but I do promise not to 'gawk' over her.'
The smile on my face grows. Did he just call me pretty? Maybe I shouldn't feed into this but my curiosity gets the best of me and I'm already typing. 'Did you just call me pretty, Evan?' I turn the water off in the tub and I get undressed getting in bringing my phone with me.
When I got a reply I quickly read it. 'Was I not supposed to?" I set my phone down washing my hair thinking on the subject. I mean it didn't bother me that he thought I was pretty but it was just something I never thought he would tell me. Especially not two days into being friends.
My phone buzzes again and I rinse my hair off drying my hands and pick it up. 'Look I'm sorry if it helps. I won't say it again.' I smile thinking its a little funny he thinks I'm mad. 'Evan I'm not upset I'm taking a bath that's why I didn't reply. We can talk about this when I'm done okay?'
I condition my hair and just soak in the tub closing my eyes. Eventually I do get out drying and pulling on my underwear and bra. I wrap my hair grabbing my phone and heading for my closet. I pick out a white tank top that was cut to be like a crop top and a pair of black sweatpants with white tie strings.
I pull a knitted sweater over it and lay softly on my bed before letting my hair down simply tossing the towel it's the corner. I pick up my phone taking a breath. 'Okay Evan I'm back. Look if you believe I'm pretty that's fine with me I just never expected you to say it out loud or even to me when we've only been friends for two days. It just shocked me that's all.'
He doesn't take long to reply and I was waiting on it. 'Normally I wouldn't have said anything but the way you brought your sister up it just seemed like you didn't think you could compare.' I smile softly because he's already inside my thoughts.
I don't compare to my sister, she's beautiful and smart. I always hoped that one day I could though she resembled our mother surprisingly so. 'Because I don't compare to her, Evan. If you seen her I'm sure you would agree.' I don't get a reply back right away so I scroll through instagram.
His message pops up on the top of my phone and I click on it. 'Fine. I'll get out of my warm bed to come prove to you that you're wrong.' I smile at him replying fast because I can't tell if he's serious or not. 'And how would you know you're right? You've never seen her.'
I lock my phone but he never replies. Eventually I hear a knock on my door. "I've already told you Ashe you don't have to knock." The door opens but I'm focused on my phone. "Well no one told me." I look over sharply hearing his rough voice.
I smile looking back at my phone. "That's because you have to knock." He chuckles softly. The room falls silent and I lock my phone getting up. I step to the foot of my bed leaving a lot of space between us. He's admiring and I can tell as he looks me up and down.
"Earth to Evan." He sighs looking down. He doesn't lift his face and I have to say something about this. "Evan I'm confused. You said I was smart enough but I just don't understand." He sighs stepping closer to me. "Riley...I just don't know how to say this."
I swallow as he touches my face. I stare up at him hoping that maybe his face has something to tell me. "Your sister never caught my eye for a second because...you already had."
To be continued...
