This is based on an episode from anime Soul Eater. Here the reader tries to help Bucky cope with his PTSD by writing a poem (much like Maka from Soul Eater convinced Crona to do so). If you're into anime you probably know what's about to happen. For those not into anime a feels warning is in order.
Even looking at him, no one could fully guess how much pain Bucky Barnes has suffered the last half century or so. As a member of the Avengers (and having a Ph.D. in psychology), you were tasked with trying to help Bucky cope from his nightmares, PTSD, and his guilt.
So far, nothing you tried has worked; no matter what approach you take, the former assassin didn't seem to make any progress. Nevertheless you were determined to find a solution.
One day you came up with an idea. "Hey, Buck," you come up to him while he was talking with Steve and Sam. "I think I've come up with something." "Does it involve talking about my feelings or something stupid like that?" "Actually I was thinking more you write them out. In the form of poetry." Bucky thinks about it for a second. "Well I guess I could give it shot. But only if you help me." "Of course," you reply.
20 minutes in Bucky writes down the last words on a piece of paper. "Here, it's done," he says handing you the poem. "Hey I wanna see," Steve looks over your shoulder as you both reads Bucky's poem. "This is ridiculous," Sam says from where he's sitting. You and Steve keep concentrating on reading the poem.
"So what do you think? Is it good?" Bucky hesitantly asks.
Without saying a single word, you and Steve walk to the corner of the room and both curl up in a fetal position. "This makes me wish I never been born," you sullenly remark. "It's so sad." Steve remarks ever so sadly. Sam looks somewhat confused.
"Hey guys!" calls Clint walking into the room all happy-go-lucky.
"How is it you all are cooped up inside when it is such a beautiful day?" Clint looks to see Steve and yourself all sullen in the corner. "What's with those two? I know things are kind of gloomy when I'm not around but luckily ole Hawkeye is here to make things better."
"Here read this," Sam hands Clint Bucky's poem. A few minutes of reading, Clint finds himself assuming a similar position next to Steve, "I wish I've never been born." Now this made Sam even more confused that a simple poem could make Clint turn morbidly sad
"What's the big deal about a stupid poem." Sam reads than joins you, Steve, and Clint in the corner, "I wish that I never been born," Soon Bucky joins the group, "I wish I never been born."
"I wish I never came back to life." Pietro remarks sullenly, "What the hell, Pietro, when did you get here?" asks Sam surprised.
After that day, as it turns out, writing poetry was actually a good coping mechanism for Bucky. You just had to make sure, nothing he wrote was TOO morbid lest anyone who reads his poetry end up wishing they never been born.
