A request from Dwako_Miller who requested a Tony one-shot where the reader is Coulson's daughter. This takes place during the first Avengers film.

Some angst in this one. Enjoy.

"I'm sorry," You hear Tony say as you lean back against the wall, sobbing your eyes out after what you just witnessed. This was never supposed to happen. You knew this day would come, but you never imagined it would end up like this.
Children should expect parents to die before them at some point, but being the daughter of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, that very likely possibility always seemed within arms reach of occurring. It had always lingered in your mind from the time you were old enough to understand the concept of death and dying, and you always told yourself you would be ready when that day came.

But it came...just not the way you expected...and you were definitely not ready...nobody was ready, not even Nick Fury.

"He's gone," you say out loud, as the tears continue to flow, "He really is gone...and he's never coming back." "You never told me you were this close to him," Tony says as he places a comforting hand on your shoulder. "Of course I was," you look up to your boyfriend, "He was my father..." Nothing could be done as the one and only Phil Coulson died at the hands of a maniac from another world.

---------------Flashback--------------------

"No," you say with a firm tone. "Please," Coulson insists, "Just this one time." "That's what you said last time," you tell him, "I'm ain't spying for S.H.I.E.L.D. even on your behalf; ESPECIALLY when the target is some reformed womanizer. Didn't realize S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were trained pimp people out too." "It's not like that," Coulson reasons, "look, since agent Romanoff's cover has basically been blown, and with Stark having been appointed as a consultant for the Avengers initiative, Director Fury needs someone else to keep an eye on him; an operative for the agency that is not officially employed and someone Stark won't suspect."

"You sure you're not trying to pimp me out?" you raise an eyebrow. "For the last time, no," Coulson defends, "And why would I do something like that to my own daughter?" "Beats me," you shrug, "from what I've seen back in New Mexico and in New York, it looks like you'll do anything to achieve S.H.I.E.L.D. objectives, regardless of how it effects civilians." "You know that incident in New Mexico and all those other times I was just following orders. That's what soldiers do." "But you're not a solider, dad," you point out, "and one of these days, that type of mentality will get you killed, you know that right?" "That's the risk we agents take doing this job everyday," Coulson tells you before placing a hand on your shoulder "And I did it all both to protect you and put bread on the table when your mother left." "I know," you sigh, knowing if you didn't take this job, Fury and your dad would simply find someone else to do it,

"Alright, I help you out, but this is the last time," you cross your arms, "I want double what you guys paid last time to do something like this." "Fair enough," Coulson nods. "And double that is Stark tries to make any kind of moves on me in the workplace." "Fine," Coulson sighs, "I swear you're getting more like your old man everyday."

--------------------End of Flashback------------------------------

"Wait a minute?" Tony eyes go somewhat wide, "Phil...he was your father?" "Yeah," you nod in confirmation. "Why didn't you tell me?" he asks. "There wasn't exactly any right moment to bring it up," you shrug. "Really?" Tony says sarcastically, "You couldn't have just brought it up in the middle of a casual dinner conversation? Like 'gee, Tony, that was an amazing dinner you made, oh by the way, agent Coulson is my FATHER? That would've been nice to know before he...sorry." "It's not that simple," you tell him, "there were..certain circumstances...the same ones that brought us together, that may have complicated me bringing it up." "Complicated how?"
