Officer Tate called into Kyle's radio which through technology had become much clearer than service he had on his phone during the storm that was barely allowing them to see without windshield wipers.
"Ryan was seen in the area checking around the blocks of his grandmother's house for cops or police cars for about twenty minutes now. We are just waiting for him to come out of the alleys and into the open of his grandmother's property which will give him less of a chance to escape."
Kyle and Jose started speeding and followed Officer Tate and Officer Jackson who were riding together. They had just come on shift to keep surveillance on Ryan. In their unmarked truck, they were expecting that Ryan wouldn't be alerted unless he knew what to look for.
The roads were thick with ice but barely clear as they made it to the location before the roll of a new storm started to hit. Kyle slowed down and held back a little bit as they turned down a street near Ryan's grandmother's house to face the back of it. The lights inside the house were on, but all the curtains were pulled closed.
Kyle pulled over and sat quietly on the side of the road but still had a clear view of Ryan's home without anyone in the home having a view of his truck. Officer Tate and Jackson were driving around to make sure Ryan didn't bring any friends with him. Silence filled Kyle's truck as they waited for permission to move forward. They both watched as the snow started falling in palm-sized flakes.
"I hope he is going to come out willingly. If this storm gets worse, we aren't going to be able to see a path to the house." Jose said.
"We'll wait all damn night if we have to." Kyle replied.
"Oh fun, a stakeout. I haven't been on one of these in a while. Everyone says it is my wife's cooking that I had to work off, but those stakeouts are what made my uniform fit tighter. For months she thought I was having an affair until she followed me a few times and saw I was spending extra time at the gym when nobody was there." Jose said making Kyle laugh.
Jose's wife had fire flowing through her veins and Kyle was sure that cheating would be the last thing Jose would do, so there wouldn't be murder on their hands. A crime of passion covers a lot of things, even against a cop.
"Hey, check this out." Jose said hitting the side of Kyle's arm.
As the darkness settled with the streetlamps as their only rays of light, they watched Ryan put a hood over his head and jogged towards his grandparent's house.
Officers Tate and Jackson turned the corner, without seeing Ryan come out of hiding. Kyle and Jose sat as still as a buck until Ryan entered the house without knocking. After he shut the door, Jose informed them that Ryan was in the house.
"OK, going in." Officer Jackson said over the radio. Kyle and Jose watched the two officers come from behind the house and walk up to Ryan's grandmother's front door. Officer Jackson knocked and the grandmother was seen answering.
"Look." Jose said as they watched Ryan run out the back door and head towards their direction.
"You ready for a light jog?" Jose joked. Kyle laughed as they got out of his truck and started walking fast towards Ryan. They were dressed for the winter as they no longer wore uniforms, but the cold started to penetrate through Kyle's pants. He was lucky his boots were gripping into the ice to keep him steady. He was also glad he had worn long socks.
Ryan flowed in a light run as he headed towards an alley where they could lose him, so they hurried towards him. It was then that Ryan saw the two big men walking fast towards him. He stopped, turned around and took off in a sprint towards an alleyway that was closer to him. Without hesitation, Kyle and Jose chased Ryan in the thick snow. Ryan was faster than Kyle had hoped he'd be, but he knew their pursuit was faster than the kid had imagined because he increased his speed. Ryan had almost reached the opening of the alley when both Kyle and Jose drew their guns and ordered him to stop.
