Trying to not to go too much over the speed limit, Jake got to Brittany's house with the passenger seat pushed as far as it could go so her straight leg would fit without having to bend it.
Brittany's parents had a place all set up for her comfort in the living area with a few great movie choices. Her mother, Jenny had already started to make food so they could eat while they watched their show. Brittany's brother was staying at a friend's house. Jake was in the kitchen for a moment to get refreshing drinks since they were waiting for Brittany to get out of the bathroom and get comfortable.
Her parents were bringing plates full of food out to the living room to set on the trays. Brittany's mother walked out with a handful of stuff and his father decided to help Jake with the drinks. He still felt a bit uncomfortable as if he were hiding a lie. Jake didn't want Brittany hurt or his extended family.
Brittany's father Aaron turned to Jake and addressed him directly.
"Son, I've known you all of your life since the diaper stage. I know when something is wrong."
Jake turned from Aaron and gave the filling of glasses more attention than they deserved.
"I know, I am sorry. I just need to talk to my dad and I can't get a hold of my sister Stacy." Jake responded but he knew Aaron, who he considered as his other father wasn't fooled.
"What can I do to help?" Aaron said in a gentle comforting tone.
Tears fill Jakes eyes and he quickly tried to blink them back still not looking up.
"I'm not sure, I'm just tired, and have a strange feeling in my stomach." Jake replied and started wiping down the counter with a hand towel he saw within reach.
"Have your parents heard from her?" He asked concerned.
"I don't know yet because I've had my phone off for a few hours since we were at the hospital. I'll try one more time after the movie." Jake said finally glancing up to meet Aaron's gaze.
Jake turned around and saw Brittany standing just inside the kitchen entryway. He could tell by the look on her face that something was just about to drop. He had already told her that he had a strange feeling about Stacy. When he thought of his sister, he felt empty and hollow, like something was wrong but he couldn't tell what it was. Jake hated to think he was as paranoid as his parents but he knew there was empty space where there shouldn't be. He was afraid he was mixing those signals with the feelings he got from Brittany and the situation they were just in. At best, he was confused and needed to focus.
"Tell my dad what is going on Jake. I feel this situation isn't safe for either of us and maybe any of us. They are going to end up finding out anyway because I live here and I'm still freshly dealing with certain things in my head. Trust me, you're going to want me to have this support system to talk me down from crazy. I don't want to be mad at you, I want to be mad at her." Brittany said. Jenny had just walked into the kitchen immediately feeling the tension in the room for it almost created a visible cloud of magnetic energy.
Jake sighed loudly and shrugged his shoulders. If Anna went crazy then it would be best if they knew what they were facing and why. Fuck it, might as well, he thought. Even though he hadn't talked to his dad yet, he knew it would be ok because Brittany's dad was his father's best friend. Jake's dad still thought Anna and Jake were on friendly terms to lead her home. That was no longer the reality.
Jake gave them a quick summary all the way up to getting tests done at the hospital and the nurse reading them their results. Aaron blew out the air he was holding and Jenny just burst out laughing then said something that shocked all of them.
