A/N: Really hope you like this (long) chapter, I've been waiting to write it for a while now (: And I am really very sorry it has taken so long to post, I just needed a break from writing.
[Maya's birthday is the 2nd of January in this - it makes the most sense for the timeline in the show with Josh's b-day being 6 weeks after (February 14th)]
Third Person.
It's Maya birthday.
It's been two days since New Year's Eve and Maya, Riley and Lucas have chosen not to speak about the incident that occurred on the roof. It's not like they've had much time to discuss what's happened, but they've left things at a "friends" zone for now.
When she first wakes up to a text from Huckleberry saying happy birthday, the first thing on her newly 16 year old mind is worries that things will be awkward today. She told Riley and Lucas yesterday that she wants things to be as normal as they were before New Year's Eve but she has her doubts about it.
Especially since she knows he'll be at her party tonight at Riley's. It's meant to be a surprise party but Riley's been planning it since before Christmas so she already knows it's happening.
But she's planning to act surprised to not hurt her best friend's feelings anyway. The only thing she's sad about it that since Riley doesn't know them, Scott and Stiles aren't going to be there partying with them.
They're coming over beforehand to give Maya her presents but she would've really loved it if they were at the party too. But to make herself feel better about it she just thinks about next year and how they'll be there for her 17th instead.
"Maya! Are you awake yet?" Katy's voice shouts through the apartment and Maya groans. It's only ten past eleven in the morning; she would have loved to sleep for another hour.
"Yeah!" She yells back though, knowing there's no point in going back to sleep. And then her mother tells her to go into the kitchen which makes her groan in annoyance again, but she gets up.
She slips on a pair of slippers and goes to the kitchen slowly, still not fully woken up yet. As she walks down her hallway the smell of batter can be smelt and her eyes widen.
When she walks through the doorway she smiles at the site. "Surprise!" It's Shawn (Mendes!! Jokes, only Hunter) and he's got a bunch of wrapped up presents with him. Next to him is Katy and in the kitchen still cooking is Gammy.
"Happy birthday baby-girl!" Katy cheers to her daughter, smiling.
Maya walks over and hugs her tightly. "Thanks mom."
"Happy sixteenth Maya." Shawn says, looking proudly at the girl. He's only known her just over a year but he's happy at how much she's grown and matured in only a year.
"Thanks, Hunter." The blonde hugs him as well and he hugs her back. Then she goes to her Gammy and looks at the pancakes she's making and hugs her as well. "Thanks Gammy."
"Happy birthday, dear." She kisses the blonde's forehead happily and then tells her to sit down to eat.
Shawn and Katy sit down too and Gammy Clutterbucket (Angela) places plates of pancakes in front of each of them. There are heaps made and each one is different; some with strawberries in it, others with blueberries, raspberries and even apple. And of course there are chocolate chip ones too.
Maya digs into, eating a bite from each different flavor, adding maple syrup to them for extra goodness. Pancakes are her favorite breakfast food and she hasn't had them for so long, especially not her grandmother's home-made ones.
