A/N: I have mixed emotions about this chapter. And sorry in advance.
Maya's POV.
My eyes flutter open, light pouring into them. I stare at the ceiling, realizing I'm on the couch in the Matthews' living room. I must have fallen asleep on it last night, meaning I missed the rest of the movie.
I sit up using my good arm and see Topanga in the kitchen, humming quietly to herself as she prepares breakfast. She's got her back to me so hasn't noticed I'm awake yet so I use this time to look around.
The curtains are all still closed, letting in only minimal light, making me wonder why I even woke up in the first place. Nonetheless, I was awake, and to my surprise, I see Josh asleep in the armchair in the room.
A smile forms on my lips seeing the boy sleeping so peacefully. However, I feel bad, he doesn't look very comfortable. I wonder why he's asleep in here instead of his room.
"Oh, Maya, you're awake." Topanga's voice interrupts my thoughts and I look over to the kitchen where she stands, a smile on her face.
"Morning," I greet her with a smile. She comes over to me.
"I see you had a little guardian watching over you last night." She observes with a small, quiet laugh.
"Yeah, apparently I did." I agree with a small nod, looking over to Josh and then back to her. "Do you mind helping me into the wheelchair?"
"Of course, Maya." She smiles sweetly at me and then helps me like she said she would.
I'm so thankful to have so many kind people in my life, I know it mustn't be easy to help me in and out of this chair. "Thanks, Topanga. I really owe everyone for helping me all the time." I say once we're up next to the dining table.
"It's my pleasure, Maya. You don't owe me anything, I'll always be there to help you." She kisses me forehead and goes to the kitchen to enjoy making breakfast. "Are you hungry?"
I nod and feel my stomach tighten in hunger. "Very. I'm gonna go to the bathroom, I'll be back."
"Do you need any help?" She offers and I decline. She nods and I make my way down the hall and into the bathroom.
It is pretty difficult for me to use their bathroom, in terms of getting out and back into the wheelchair. And then there's trying to use the sink, and see myself in the mirror.
After what feels like an hour in the bathroom, I finally go back to the dining table, hoping I look alright considering I couldn't really use the mirror when I was fixing my hair.
When I roll into the room, I find Josh sitting at the dining table with a plate of food in front of him, Topanga sat across from him, and Cory next to her.
"Good morning, Maya." Cory greets, a smile on his face.
"Good morning, Mr Matthews." I greet back, getting set up at the table in my wheelchair.
Josh and I make eye contact, smiling shyly at each other but not saying anything. His face looks incredibly cute, cheeks flushed from just waking up and his hair all messy and tousled around.
I begin to help myself to some food, taking a couple warm pancakes and some fruit, adding some syrup and even a cookie that Topanga and Auggie had made the night before.
During our breakfast, Auggie and Riley eventually join, yawning as they walk into the room together. They take their seats and begin eating with the rest of us.
It's a calm breakfast, slow and filled with mostly happy silence as we enjoy our lovely breakfast. Some conversation plays around the table as we eat, but mostly we all just enjoy the food.
