Third Person.
Three Days Later.
24th December. Christmas Eve.
Josh wakes up, his eyes flying open to the sound of the vacuum in the hallway outside his bedroom door. As it passes by, a knock sounds against the door and his mother comes walking inside without waiting for a response.
"I need to vacuum in here!" She yells over the loud noise.
He groans and pulls up the covers over his head, annoyed at the rude awakening. He'd gotten to his parents' house three days ago, on Monday afternoon. He's being forced by them to spend the holidays with them since he'll be living with his brother from now on.
"Why now?" He grumbles, his voice muffled from the blankets.
His mother just rolls her eyes at him. "It's Christmas! Guests will be coming over!"
He pushes the blankets from over his head and sits up, furrowing his eyebrows at her. "But they won't be coming into my room!" He shouts over the noise.
"You never know!" Amy shakes her head, ignoring the stare from her son. She continues cleaning and Josh gets up, going to the bathroom to escape the vacuum.
He doesn't care to spend the holidays with his parents this year, which sounds terrible, but he'd just much rather spend the days with his girlfriend. He wishes his parents could've just come down to New York and spent Christmas with his brother and their family instead.
If they did then he could have spent his time with Maya. And been able to give her a present on Christmas, rather than on the Sunday night like he had. It was a simple gift, a gift voucher for a spa day, a large box filled with all of her favorite candy and a heart shaped key-chain with their initials engraved onto it.
He would've bought her something much more expensive and better, but since her eighteenth birthday is a week after Christmas, he figured he would save the bigger, better presents for then.
After his shower, he returns to his room to get dressed and ready for the day, glad that his mother is finished vacuuming upstairs. As he pulls on a large maroon sweater over a long sleeve t-shirt, he catches sight of one of the presents Maya got him.
The sight reminds him of the moment she handed it to him and he smiles at the memory.
*Flashback*
"Here." She handed him the large rectangular box, tied closed but a dark green ribbon.
He took it from her, placing it on his lap as they sit on the bed next to one another. He cast a glance at her before pulling on the ribbon to undo it. Once it was untied, he cautiously took the top off, revealing dark green tissue paper inside, hiding the present.
He smiled and he placed the box lid down next to him before removing the tissue paper from the box to reveal the present. As soon as he saw the Christmas sweater inside, a smile spread across his face, his eyes lighting up in joy.
It was an 'ugly' Christmas sweater that he'd said he wanted a month ago when he saw it in stores while on a date with Maya. He didn't think she'd remember that it was this specific one that he had wanted.
