"Are you sure you want to go?" Carter asks as I put my shoes on. "Yes." I say for the fifth time.

"Alright. Do you want me to drive you there?"

"No. I want to go alone." I say and zip my sweater on. Carter looks at me, concern written all over his face.

"I'll be fine." I say and walk out the door.

"Hello?" I quietly yell as I walk down the dark alley. I can see my breath as I sigh into the cold night.

"Mason?" I look down at my watch and sigh. It's 10:20. I turn around, ready to walk home.

"Ethan?"

I freeze. My heartbeat quickens as I hear his footsteps coming closer and closer.

I'm scared. But, why?

I wipe the sweat from my brow with a trembling hand, fear from my narrow escape coursing through my veins. "I have to tell you something."

"How about you tell me where you've been the last month." I say without turning around.

"Look, I've been tracking down-"

"I don't care!" I yell finally turning around. My fingers tips are icy cold, I look at him. His hair is hanging right under his eyebrows, I can tell he hasn't gotten a haircut.

"Look," He says looking at me with those once sweet eyes. I look into his dark, hard eyes and give him a hurt look. "I'm sorry. But I have an exp-"

"I don't care. You have no idea how much pain you've caused me." I say tears welling up inside my eyes as I see a clear image of how different it would've been if he hadn't ran away.

"Look," He says swiftly moving his bangs out of the way, giving me a clear view of his features. The faint light of the street lights illuminate his features, making him seem gloomy and dangerous.

"Don't even bother explaining." I say and turn around, making my way towards the exit of the alley.

I feel Masons strong grip on my shoulder. I'm harshly pushed against the brick wall, the ridges of the bricks scrape my cheek as I groan in pain. "Do you really think it was easy letting go?" He asks harshly.

"Because it was not. Just the thought of you being with someone else made me feel empty." He says his eyes searching mine. My cheek burns but, I ignore the pain and try and focus on what he's saying.

"Carter isn't any good for you." He says looking down at the ground, his hands still holding me against the brick wall. I look at him and give him a confused look.

"How did you know?" I ask my voice cracking.

"I'm sorry for all the pain I've caused you." His eyes seemed to have softened. "You made my life so much better." He looks at me and that's when I notice ink curling over his shoulder.

A tattoo?

"But, I'm making yours worse. I fucked up, and now I can't fix my mistakes." I can tell he's trying to fight back tears. "Promise me you won't tell anyone about this." He says his eyes turning hard again.

 I nod.

He looks at me for a while then slowly leans in. I close my eyes and try to ignore my surroundings. His lips hesitantly touch mine. He then slowly wraps his arms around me.

Tears begin rolling down my cheeks. Just the touch of his lips brings back so many memories.

The first time he kissed me was a year ago. When he found out his brother was going to finally come out of prison. His bright smile, I haven't seen him smile that big in a long time.

He pulls away and stares at my tears, "it'll be fine." He says.

I slowly open my eyes, I sigh as I realize Mason has left.

Will the pain go away as time goes by?

***

I slump onto the couch as I enter the house. Carter's gone. I sigh and close my eyes and right when I'm drifting off into a deep sleep, the front door swings open. "Look!"

I groan and open my eyes. Carter stands there with his hair hanging just above his eyebrows. His hair is a mint green. And again, it suits him.

His smile immediately turns into a frown. "Sorry..." He whispers. I force a smile and stand up. "It's suits you." I say and look up at his hair. I'm shorter than Carter. But, I think everyone is.

Carter is six feet tall. Maybe even taller. He smiles and ruffles my hair. "You should dye your hair more often." He says and smiles down at me. "But, I just dyed it last month." I say holding a strand of my now dirty blond hair between my fingers.

"I'm kidding." He says a small laugh coming out of his mouth. "Dyeing my hair has become an addiction." He says his expression sarcastically becoming serious. I laugh and kiss his cheek, I abruptly stop myself and pull away.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing." I say and glance at the clock. "I'm going to sleep." I walk up the stairs, I can feel Carter's eyes on me as I walk into our room.
