In which Ash is not as dense as he usually is.
Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie were watching Serena and her Pokemon train for their upcoming performance. Braixen was in the middle of a complicated-looking dance using Flamethrower while Pancham was practicing his Stone Edge. Sylveon, meanwhile, was using Fairy Wind to...well, it was difficult to tell what she was doing, but it was fascinating anyway.
"Serena!"
The four friends turned at the sound of the voice. It was Miette, Serena's rival and a friend of the group. She and her partner, Slurpuff, were coming up the hill.
"Hey, Miette," Ash greeted her. "It's been a while."
"It has, hasn't it?" Miette agreed. "It's good to see all of you. Especially you, Ash," she added, winking.
Bonnie rolled her eyes and Serena glared at her. "Uh...thanks," Ash replied uncomfortably. Miette was nice and all, but did she have to be so...well, flirtatious?
"So what brings you here, Miette?" Clemont asked.
"I was just on my way to Anistar City for the Pokemon showcase," Miette replied. "I'm assuming you'll be there too, Serena?"
"You bet I will," Serena said, though it was in a slightly colder tone than usual.
Luckily, Miette didn't seem to notice. "Great, then I guess we'll be seeing each other there," she said.
Serena nodded. "So will you be going now?" she asked hopefully.
"Actually, I wanted to ask something of Ash first," Miette answered. Ash tried to stop himself from groaning in annoyance. "So Ash, would you be interested in going on a date with me?"
Ash sighed. "Look, Miette," he said, trying to be as nice as possible. "You're a nice friend and all, but I'm just not interested."
Miette's face fell. Behind her, Serena looked extremely relieved and happy. Ash couldn't help thinking that Serena looked pretty when she was smiling before he shook his head and turned back to Miette.
"Right," he said. "So, uh...sorry."
"Oh, it's no problem," Miette said, shooting Serena a dark look. "I'll just be going now, then."
She turned around and walked away. Ash felt a little bad about being harsh to her, but hey, it was better than lying, right?
"All right, now it's your turn, Serena!" Bonnie said cheerfully.
"Bonnie!" Serena exclaimed, looking scandalized. Ash wondered if she had always looked this beautiful. "That's so rude!"
"What is?" Clemont asked.
"It's not that rude," Bonnie disagreed.
"What's not that rude?" Clemont asked. Ash looked between Serena, who was blushing, and Bonnie, who was grinning, and tried to connect the dots until something finally clicked in his brain.
"I think I know what you mean," he said to Serena. "And you're right, it would be rude. If Miette were still here, that is. But she's not, so what's the harm?"
"The harm in what?" Clemont shouted, looking a little annoyed now.
"I just don't feel right asking right after she tried," Serena admitted.
"Who said you have to do the asking?" Ash countered. "I'll do it instead. Serena, would you like to go out with me sometime?"
Serena looked shocked. "Wait...you mean it?"
"Of course I do," Ash replied. "I never ask questions I don't mean, do I?"
"No, you don't," Serena agreed, smiling.
Ash grinned. "So what will your answer be?"
Serena beamed at him and kissed him on the cheek. Clemont looked shocked and Bonnie practically fainted with happiness, but Ash and Serena ignored them. This was their moment.
"Yes," she whispered. "Yes, I'll go out with you."
