1. Can't follow instructions

"Remember Ash, you need to weaken a Pokemon before you try to catch it," Misty lectured our favorite raven-haired protagonist. "That will make the Pokemon easier to catch. Use Pikachu's attacks to lower its health, and then-"

"Right, right," Ash interrupted, cutting off whatever Misty was about to say next. "I got it. Now I'm going to go catch that Caterpie over there."

Misty shook her head and sighed as Ash approached the Caterpie and, without even bothering to call on Pikachu, hurled the Pokeball at the passing bug-type. Caterpie was sucked inside for a split second before bursting out again and continuing on its way as if nothing had happened.

Ash just groaned in frustration. This was going to be a very long journey.

2. Indecisive with commands

Froakie stood in front of a wild Spewpa, armed and ready for battle. Well, he would be, at least, if his trainer could actually decide which attack she wanted to start off with.

"Froakie, use Bubble!"

"Wait, no, use Pound instead."

"I changed my mind. Let's use Growl and lower its attack."

"Never mind, let's just go with Water Pulse."

Eventually, the wild Spewpa grew tired of waiting and slithered off into the forest. Froakie watched him go and sighed. Perhaps one day he would finally find a trainer who actually knew what they were doing-or at the very least one that didn't constantly change their mind about commands.

3. Fake optimistic trainer

"Come on Pikachu, the first gym is just up ahead," Ash said, racing up a dirt path towards the Pewter City gym. "Man, I'm psyched, aren't you? We're going to win this gym battle for sure, and then it's just seven more to go until the league. There's no way anyone can stand in our way, right buddy?"

"Ash, you have three Pokemon, two of which are weak to rock, and I'm pretty sure Brock's Pokemon are also part ground-type, which makes my attacks useless," Pikachu said, shaking his head. "I hate to tell you this, but I think we're in for a bad time."

4. The pessimist

"Okay Trevor, now that we've done some training, what do you say to a Pokemon battle?" Shauna suggested. "It would be great experience, especially if you're going to challenge the league."

Trevor, however, just sighed and looked down at the ground. "I can't do it," he said despondently. "It's too hard."

Shauna patted him on the shoulder. "Just try," she said encouragingly.

Trevor nodded and released his Charmander from his Pokeball to face off against Shauna's Bulbasaur. Try as he might, however, he couldn't think of a way to start the battle. No matter what, he just couldn't see any way he could win, even with a type advantage. After all, nothing ever seemed to go right for him; why should it start now?

"I can't do it," he repeated.

Charmander looked back at his trainer. I feel your pain, he thought. But trust me, being your Pokemon is much more painful.

5. Interpretive dance trainer

Squirtle was loving his new life-what wasn't to love? After months of waiting, he was finally on a Pokemon journey with a trainer of his own, just like his brothers and sisters before him. It also didn't hurt that his new trainer was quite good at cooking as well. With their teamwork, Squirtle was certain that they could beat anyone who stood in their way.

...Of course, that being said, it would make things a lot easier if he could actually figure out what those dance moves Tierno was performing meant.
