"What's he doing here?" I could hear Scotts voice as I sat on the table. Derek, Scott and I are supposed to meet up in the animal clinic to discuss the Kanima. Of course there are brought a surprise visitor.
"I need him." Derek states casually.
"I don't trust him." Scott says annoyed.
"Yeah, well, he doesn't trust you either." Isaac's voice echoed.
"You know what? And Derek really doesn't care. Now where's the vet? Is he gonna help us or not?" I could hear Derek getting irritated. Deaton walks out of the room toward their voices.
"That depends. Your friend, Jackson. Are we planning to kill him or save him?" Deaton asked the group of boys. I could hear Derek and Scott both answer with different answers. Scott repeats 'save him.' The group of boys walk in and see me sitting on the table.
"Hey there." Isaac flashes his pearly white teeth at me. Derek growls lowly at him as I giggle.
"Hello boys." I wink at them as Scott helps me down. Deaton sets down a rack filled with bottles of herbs.
"Watch what you touch." Derek smacks Isaac's hand as he tries to reach for one of the bottles.
"So, what are you? Some kind of witch?" Isaac leans against the table.
"No, if anything you would consider Alexis a witch. I'm a veterinarian." Deaton smiles.
"Don't call me a witch." I flash my purple eyes.
"Unfortunately, I don't see anything here that's going to be an effective defense against a paralytic toxin." Deaton says as he looked through the bottles.
"We're open to suggestions." Derek tells him.
"Anything will do at this point." I nod my head.
"What about an effective offense?" Isaac asked.
"We already tried. I nearly took its head off. Argent emptied an entire clip into it. Alexis has tried all of her abilities on it. The thing just gets back up." Derek says. It was true.
"It wares off after while against that thing. If I contain it the tail still moves. Its as if the tail isn't part of him." I shake my head.
"Its strange how a kanima works. Has it shown any weaknesses?" Deaton asked.
"Well, one - it can't swim." Derek points out.
"Does that go for Jackson as well?" Deaton asked.
"No. He's the captain of the swim team." Scott shakes his head.
"He lives in water." I commented.
"Essentially, you're trying to catch two people. A puppet - and a puppeteer. One killed the husband, but the other had to take care of the wife. Do we know why?" Deaton states as he held out a small medallion.
"I don't think Jackson could do it. His mother died pregnant too, and she was maybe murdered. I think he couldn't let the same thing happen to someone else." Scott thinks.
"So the master had to do it." I thought.
"How do you know it's not part of the rules? The kanima kills murderers. If Jackson kills the wife, then the baby dies too."
"Does that mean your father was a murderer?" Scott asked him.
"Wouldn't surprise me if he was." Isaac sighs.
"Hold on. The book says they're bonded, right? What if the fear of water isn't coming from Jackson, but from the person controlling him? What if something that affects the kanima also affects its master?" Deaton suggested.
