THE AWAKENING

Chapter 20, Don't leave me

Damon and Elena looked at each other and then Damon looked down and stroked her hair, she grabbed his hand tightly and gazed at him, he looked up and sighed of relief and showed a smile, Elena sat beside him on the ground in front of the car and they stared at each other.

"Elena I could of lost you! What were you thinking?!" Damon asked sternly

"I remember everything.." Elena paused

"What?" Damon asked

"I remember the first time you told me you loved me and that you couldn't be selfish with me and you're brother deserved me, I remember the first time we met, you were a mysterious stranger with all the answers. When you held me hostage in my own house, when you danced with me in the miss mystic falls and helped me save Stefan, when you gave me my necklace that represented hope for me and Stefan, when you got stuck on the other side and I thought I had lost you forever, when you kidnapped me and saved me so many times, when we went to Tennessee and we kissed for the first time, when we first met the second time, when I hated you and then we became friends. The time I said goodbye to you with our dance the place we first met and then I was asleep for 60 years, when we argued too much and then ended up in bed together, Damon I remember it all!" Elena exclaimed

"And how do you feel about that?" Damon asked

"I feel alive" Elena laughed

"You're marrying my brother tho" Damon looked away

"I know.." Elena paused

"And is that what you want?" Damon asked and moved closer

"I don't know what I want.. But right now I want to be here.. With you" she smiled and kissed him

They kissed more and more and then Elena fell on Damon's shoulder, and her mouth started to draw with blood, Damon looked up and saw she was bleeding out, he panicked and tried to feed her his blood but she wouldn't take it, he put her in the back of his blue Volvo and drove off, he carried her to the door of the safe house and laid her on the sofa, Hayley and Rebekah were there and gasped as they saw Elena who was nearly dead.

"How can this happen she's a vampire" Rebekah mumbled

"Damon did she remember everything from the border?" Hayley asked

"Yeah..." Damon paused

"She's turning human again..." Rebekah looked serious

"Human!?" Damon asked

"Yes, she's transforming back into a human and there's a possibility she might not wake up" Hayley sighed

They observed Elena for hours, Damon took her upstairs and laid her on the bed and sat beside her as she still hadn't awoken, Stefan and the others weren't back yet and Rebekah and Hayley were downstairs waiting for them. Damon sat on a chair beside Elena who was tucked up in bed, he held her hand tightly and looked down.

"Well I didn't think tonight would turn out like this, You remember everything and now you might not even wake up, you always showed the good in me When nobody else did, you believed in me when everyone else left me, thank you, I don't know what we are but you're strong and you're brave and you're a fighter and you will get through this Elena, wake up you have to wake up, you don't get to die on me not tonight not ever, you're gonna wake up and wonder what the hell happened, Elena I love you, and I've always loved you since the moment I set eyes on you and not because you look like Katherine because you're selfless, you're beautiful and kind and caring, things that Katherine never was, I love you" Damon smiled and kissed her hand

Elena awoke and smiled, sat up. Damon grinned widely and Elena wrapped her arms around him, she smiled and glanced around and saw everything was a little blurry, she sat back in bed and yawned, Damon chuckled and gripped onto her hand.

"I didn't think you were going to wake up.." Damon paused

"Well I'm here now" Elena smiled

"Elena you're human again..." Damon paused

"I know.. I don't crave the feeling for blood anymore" Elena sighed

"You can grow up now and have kids with Stefan" Damon frowned

"Damon... You know I love you and I remember everything but I can't hurt Stefan and he really loves me.. I'm sorry" Elena frowned

"I get it.." Damon frowned

"Damon look at me, you will find someone who will make you as happy as you made me" Elena smiled

"I should go.. You're fiancée is here" Damon frowned and walked out

Damon went Into his room and started to pack his things, he cleared the whole room and then took the bag full of his things and walked downstairs to see a drunken Stefan on the floor, he sighed and picked him up and sat him on the sofa, Klaus was oddly sober with Elijah and Kol and Finn went to bed, Damon sat beside Stefan and faced them all as Hayley and Rebekah walked back in.

"I'm leaving" Damon announced

"Where to? It's not safe out there Damon" Hayley frowned

"I'll be fine, Stefan good luck with the wedding and you better make that girl happy, she deserves all the happiness you could give her.. Don't let her go, she's special.. Send Elena my regards.." Damon paused

"You're not going to say goodbye?" Stefan asked and drunk water

"No.. Goodbyes aren't my thing.. See you soon" Damon frowned and walked out

Hayley ran upstairs to Elena, Elena sat there and grabbed her out of bed, she still wore her dress from the party and her hair was in messy curls, Hayley frowned and told Elena everything and Elena ran downstairs and out the door to see Damon putting his bag into the car boot, she ran after him and stopped as he saw her.

"You weren't going to say goodbye?" Elena asked

"Goodbyes aren't my thing Elena.." Damon paused

"After everything we've been through?" Elena asked

"What's the point! I will only ruin things for you Elena, I have to go!" Damon shouted

"Why!?" Elena shouted

"Because I love you Elena!! And you're with my brother and that would make me feel guilty for wanting what I want!" Damon shouted

"Damon don't go! Please!" Elena pleaded

"I have to" Damon frowned

"No you don't.. Stay" Elena frowned and touched his cheeks with her hands cupping them

"Elena.." Damon paused

"Damon please.." Elena pleaded again

"You are by far the greatest thing that's happened to me on my 175 years of this earth, I don't have a choice baby.. I have to go, My brother deserves you, I wanted you to get everything you were looking for and you have, a love that consumed you, passion and adventure and even a little danger, you have that with Stefan, I can't jeopardise that" Damon frowned

"No I have that with you.." Elena paused

"I love you Elena, you get everything you want okay! Don't give up and be happy, live you're life without me" Damon frowned

A tear rolled down Damon's cheek and him and Elena kissed passionately and then they both pulled away and he kissed her on her head and got into his car and drove away and left a heartbroken Elena left on the road crying, Damon drove off as more tears left his cheeks and crossed the mystic falls border... As Elena was left there crying.
