Enjoy!
The door flew open with a bang.
Hiccup scrambled backward, though he was in a hospital bed so he couldn't get very far.
The high-pitched beep of the heart monitor began to quickly accelerate as a grey-haired man charged in the door, red-faced and quite obviously angry.
Astrid looked to Hiccup's scrawny figure practically folded in on itself, his cut hands coming up to shield his face. Astrid stood tall, trying to show Hiccup that he wasn't alone.
"What are ya doin' here, boy?" He growled, his face menacing.
Hiccup shrunk into the bed, his face frozen in a cringe, his eyes wide.
"Ya know ya ain' surpposed ta be screwin' around." He yelled.
Astrid spoke up. "With all due respect, sir, it wasn't Hiccup's fault at all. He was just trying to--"
The large man cut in. "I don't need ya damn excuses! He's wastin' me time!"
Astrid frowned. The man looked surprised to see her, so she decided to use that to her advantage.
"Hiccup was trying to save the life of his friend and--"
"What is he, a damned charity? He's wastin' me time and money just by bein' here!" Mildew cut in.
She took a second to study the man.
He wasn't overly large, but he had muscles from what seemed to be a rigorous past. Clearly Hiccup's mentor, he didn't seem very kind to be taking on a kid.
Hiccup had had enough today. He didn't need this on top of everything else.
"I'm sorry, sir, but if you interrupt me one more time you're not going to be the only one yelling. Hiccup did something to protect someone else, something heroic and brave. You have no right to treat him like this. He survived a shark attack, and he didn't survive it just so you could come barging in here and yell at him. Now you can either be quiet or leave.
He narrowed, his eyes, and Astrid did the same. She didn't back down, and after what felt like eons the man stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
Astrid turned back to Hiccup's tense figure.
The beeping from the monitor's beep had increased rapidly, there was hardly any space between them. He was trembling and panting, his breaths were coming in short hiccups and he looked like he was about to pass out.
She walked over to his bed.
He didn't look at her, just stared at the wall, continuing his panicked state.
She sat down next to him, keeping a safe distance but watching him out of the corner of her eye.
After a minute she gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
He still didn't look at her.
She took her other hand and picked up his, gently lacing their fingers together.
He looked at her then, his face distraught.
"Why did you do that?" He asked quietly.
"Because it needed to be done." She whispered, running her thumb softly over the stitches in his hand.
He looked down at their hands, confusion and gratefulness playing across his face.
After a minute or two Astrid took her hand away and stood up.
"You should get some rest." She said, meeting his eyes.
He nodded, and she walked out the door.
The second she got back to the waiting room her friends bombarded her with questions.
"Where were you?"
"Were you with Hiccup?"
"Why did you leave?"
"When did you leave?"
"GUYS, chill. I was just checking on Hiccup for Tuffnut. I'm gonna go tell him how he's doing."
"Okay, if you insist," Ruff said.
Astrid turned and entered room 243, glad her friends didn't follow.
Once the door opened, Tuff looked up.
"Hey, Tuff. How ya feelin'?" She asked.
He shrugged. "I've been better." His face turned hopeful. "Hiccup?"
"He's resting right now, but he's alive and sarcastic as ever."
Tuff smiled, lying back on his bed. It quickly turned into a frown, and he looked at her doubtfully.
"I heard yelling over there. What happened? He shouldn't be getting yelled at right now." Tuff stated, narrowing his eyes accusingly.
Astrid sighed and sat down next to him.
"His guardian came in while I was in there. Definitely the evilest guy I have ever met. Started yelling at Hiccup, poor guy. I tried to back him up but the bastard kept interrupting me. I finally got what I was trying to say out, we had a stand-off of sorts, he left. Hiccup was pretty freaked out by it." She informed him, looking down at the ground as she remembered what just happened.
Tuffnut nodded and thanked her for the info.
"What are we gonna do, Tuff? He can't live like that."
"Astrid, if he wanted to do something, he would. The best thing we can do for him is just leaving him be."
Astrid sighed and nodded, knowing he was right.
"Get better soon, Tuff." And with that, she closed the door.
Instead of going into the waiting room, she decided to check up on Hiccup one last time.
The door was slightly ajar, which she found weird because she remembered closing it when she left.
She opened the door to find that man was back, standing over Hiccup.
Hiccup's head was bowed and you could tell he was shaking from across the room.
Amber Astrid 'Fearless' Hofferson was about to go off.
She stormed up to the big man and before she could do anything, Hiccup looked up, though he couldn't see her.
His lip was bleeding and his cheek was red.
Had this man... Hit Hiccup?
It is on.
She politely tapped him on the shoulder and the man whipped around.
She drew her fist back and hit him in the face as hard as she could.
The man stumbled backward before lunging forwards.
Astrid dodged his attack and used his momentum to slam him into the wall.
"This is a fight you won't win." She said calmly, and opened the door.
He stormed out.
Once the door was closed, Astrid ran over to Hiccup.
"Hiccup?"
He looked up.
"Hiccup, what happened to you?!" She asked, running her hand over his cheek.
He looked awful.
Hiccup, you need to rest. You're badly injured and lost a lot of blood.
He said nothing. He looked like he was about to pass out, swaying slightly in his sitting position.
She gently pushed his shoulders, forcing him to lay down.
She smiled at him before walking out the door, and the second she did she heard the heart monitor take off.
More to come later!
